Steinwald and Scott Lee each tallied four goals
and one assist to lead the No. 13-ranked Cornell
University mens lacrosse team to a 12-8
victory against Colgate University Tuesday
afternoon.
Colgate jumped out to an early
2-0 lead with goals at the 13:37 and 11:29 marks
of the first quarter. Ian Franke registered an
unassisted goal and then Parker Gibson struck the
net on a feed from Peter Watts.
Cornell evened the score at 2-2 after
Lees first goal at 8:08 from Steinwald and
then Lee scored a man-up goal at 6:46 of the
first.
Brendan Sandel gave the Red Raiders a 3-2 lead
at the end of the first on an assist from Matthew
Cihon at 2:40 in the first.
Cornells Lee evened the game at 3-3 at
the 8:36 mark of the second, but Brendan Sandel
gave Colgate the lead under a minute later from
Franke.
Trevor OReilly gave Colgate a two-goal
advantage with a short-handed goal at 5:39 of the
second. Lee cut the lead to 5-4 at halftime with
his third goal at the 4:26 mark of the second.
The third quarter was all Cornell and all 1999
Honorable-Mention All-America Steinwald who
registered three third-quarter goals. Steinwald
opened the scoring in the third just nine seconds
into the period when he stole a clearing attempt
by goalie Paul Abrahimzadeh and then scored on
the open net.
Chris Packard gave the Big Red their first
lead of the game just 34 seconds later at 6-5.
Steinwald scored two more goals at 11:31 and at
10:04 getting his own rebound and pounding it in
to build an 8-5 advantage.
Colgate cut the lead to 9-8 after three
quarters with goals by Franke, OReilly and
Menton in the last 4:43 of the period.
Steinwald gave the Big Red a two-goal cushion
with his fourth goal of the game at 14:13 in the
fourth, while Ryan McClay and David Key closed
out the scoring for the 12-8 final.
