COLGATE FALLS IN SEASON
FINALE 11-9 AGAINST LEHIGH
Hamilton, N.Y. - The Lehigh
University men's lacrosse team remained in the
hunt for the Patriot League title withstanding a
late fourth-quarter run by third-place Colgate to
prevail 11-9 in action Saturday afternoon.
Colgate honored its seven seniors Jay Menton,
Trevor O'Reilly, Nate Morse, Antone Morreale, Jim
Gallagher, Dan Dowd, and Conor Tracy all playing
in their final collegiate games.
Colgate (4-9, 3-3 in Patriot League) took the
early advantage with unassisted markers by Danny
Grady and Parker Gibson at 14:17 and 5:52,
respectively. Grady intercepted a Lehigh clearing
attempt and found the empty-net from 25 yards
out. Gibson broke in alone on his goal and fired
from 15 yards out to put Colgate ahead 2-0.
Christian Castellani scored the first of three
goals on the day at 2:37 to put Lehigh on the
board. Then with just two ticks on the clock in
the first quarter O'Reilly scored the first of
his three goals to put Colgate ahead 3-1.
Lehigh (7-4, 2-2 in PL) began to pick up its
offensive intensity at the start of the second
quarter with a five-goal run to open up the
quarter with two goals from Doug McKerns and
single markers by Tim McWilliams, David Cohen and
Tom Richardson to build a 6-3 lead with 3:30
remaining in the first half.
Colgate cut the lead to 6-5 in the final
minutes of the second quarter with a goal from
Gibson at 1:39 and Nick Gerken's marker with 40
seconds remaining. It was Gerken's first
collegiate goal in just his second appearance of
the year after missing the majority of his rookie
campaign with a torn ACL.
However, the Mountain Hawks applied the early
pressure once again in the third with the first
two goals to take an 8-5 lead. Gabe Osario
recorded a man-up goal from Castellani at 11:09
and Scott Reynolds added another man-up marker
from Cohen at 8:27. Lehigh was strong with its
man-up opportunities all day converting five of
its seven chances (.714).
Colgate cut the lead to 8-6 with Gibson's
third goal of the game, but Lehigh mounted
another early fourth quarter surge to build an
11-6 lead with 13:12 remaining. The Red Raiders
mounted a late comeback scoring the final three
goals of the game two from O'Reilly and one from
Grady, but time ran out on Colgate and its
season.
Todd Schreiner recorded 16 saves for Lehigh
which was outshot 42-25 and Paul Abrahimzadeh
made six saves for Colgate.
