Hobart knocks off Patriot League leader

GENEVA, N.Y.-- Seven games into the 2000 season, the 18th-ranked Hobart College lacrosse team made its 21st century debut on Boswell Field a memorable one with a 20-5 dismantling of Patriot League front-runner Colgate University. Junior attackman Jamie Breslin (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) led all scorers with four goals and two assists.

The opening quarter gave little warning of the offensive explosion to come, as the Statesmen (4-3, 4-1 Patriot League) held a modest 4-2 lead after 15 minutes.

Senior midfielder Spencer Niebuhr (Stony Brook/Smithtown, N.Y.) opened the scoring a minute and a half in, off a feed from junior midfielder Joe Leska (Vestal/Vestal, N.Y.). Two minutes later, Breslin netted his first goal, set up by senior attackman Jared Bebee (West Genesee/Syracuse, N.Y.). The assist extended Bebee's streak of consecutive games with at least a point to 34 games.

The Red Raiders (3-7, 2-1) roared back with consecutive goals by junior attackman Ryan Asher (Vestal/Vestal, N.Y.) and first-year midfielder Peter Watts (Salisbury School/Wayland, Mass.) at the 10:18 and 7:21 marks, respectively, to knot the game at 2-2.

Breslin and Bebee scored back-to-back goals 17 seconds apart inside the final minute of the quarter to give Hobart a 4-2 lead. The Statesmen broke the game open with the first five goals of the second quarter to take a 9-2 advantage with six minutes to go in the half.
Colgate finally notched its third goal of the game with 3:33 left in the half, on the second of junior attackman Eamon DePeter's two goals. The Nyack, N.Y. native finished with a team-high three points.

Senior attackman Kevin DeWall (Waterloo/Waterloo, N.Y.) scored the final goal of the first half on a man-down situation with five seconds remaining before the break to give Hobart a 10-3 lead.

The Statesmen, who have now won 17 straight meetings with the Red Raiders, posted the first six goals of the second half, before Colgate finally broke through at the 8:59 mark of the fourth quarter. The Hobart defense shutout the Red Raiders' attack for 24 minutes and 31 seconds between their third and fourth goals.

Three Statesmen recorded their first career points this afternoon: first-year midfielder Sean Kent (LaSalle/Oreland, Pa.), senior defenseman Christian McLean (Lynbrook/Lynbrook, N.Y.), and first-year attackman Sean Powers (Colonie Central/Albany, N.Y.). McLean notched an assist on Hobart's 13th goal, Kent recorded the Statesmen's 18th goal, and Powers put the final nail in the coffin with an unassisted tally at the 1:47 mark.

Hobart senior James Murtha (Manhasset/Manhasset, N.Y.) made two saves in 45 minutes of work, while first-year Mike Borsz (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.), and sophomores Hunter MacDonnell (Salisbury/Darien, Conn.) and Kayser Dixon (Avon Old Farms/Bedford, N.Y.) combined for three saves in the third quarter.
Junior Paul Abrahimzadeh (Phillips Exeter/Manchester, N.H.) and sophomore Chris Hettler (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) combined for 12 saves for Colgate.
