COLGATE HOCKEY FORCES OVERTIME IN DRAMATIC FASHION;
FALL IN EXTRA SESSION AGAINST MICHIGAN
IN NCAA EAST REGIONAL

Darryl Campbell scores two goals and Andy McDonald registers three points in loss

ALBANY, N.Y. – Colgate University seniors Andy McDonald, Darryl Campbell and Shep Harder did all they could do to keep their final campaign alive, but Michigan’s Geoff Koch dashed all hopes with his goal at 12:44 into overtime of the NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey East Regional first round game.

Colgate thought the game was over at the 4:00 mark of the overtime period when Mike O’Malley scored on a rebound, but the goal was disallowed because referee Tim Fitzgerald said he had blown his whistle. The replay showed that the goal had indeed crossed the line before his whistle was blown, but Fitzgerald chose not to review the goal.
Colgate (24-9-2) tied the game at 3-3 with just 48 seco0nds remaining in the third period when Campbell netted his second goal of the game from Sean Nolan and McDonald closing out a comeback from a 3-0 deficit.

McDonald skated with the puck up the right boards and passed it to Nolan in the corner. Nolan then found Campbell in the high slot who ripped a slap shot to Blackburn’s left side.

Michigan took the early advantage at 6:41 of the first period on Mike Roemensky’s first goal of the season. Mark Kosick dug the puck out of the left corner and passed it out to Josh Langfeld at the point and he found Roemensky at the top right face-off circle. Roemensky’s shot beat Colgate goaltender Harder over his left shoulder.

The Wolverines (27-9-4) built a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period on a power-play marker by Mike Comrie, his 22nd marker of the year at the 16:55 mark. Mike Cammalleri got the puck and passed it to the low right slot to Comrie who wristed it to the right corner of the net.

Michigan surged ahead 3-0 at the 6:39 mark of the second period when Mark Mink scored his eighth goal of the season. John Shouneyia made a cross-ice pass to Cammalleri inside the left face-off circle. Cammalleri passed it across the low slot to Mink who beat Harder on his glove side.

As what was expected might happen in the game, Michigan was whistled for several penalties in the second period. Colgate had five power-play opportunities in the second and this was the momentum they would need as they battled back to tie the game.

The Red Raiders got on the board when Hobey Baker Memorial Award finalist Andy McDonald scored his 25th goal of the year on the power-play at 12:43. Fellow senior Mike Marostega forced a turnover in the high slot blocking a clearing attempt and passed it to McDonald who skated in alone and beat Josh Blackburn with a fake and backhanded it in the net.

Campbell cut the lead to 3-2 at 17:13 of the second with Colgate’s second power-play goal of the game. McDonald passed the puck out of the left boards to Cory Murphy at the top of the left face-off circle and then sent a cross-ice pass to Campbell on the inside low right face-off circle to beat Blackburn on the right side.

Harder was extremely strong in net thwarting 31 shots on the evening -- including several game-saving stops. He ended his career with a 21-7-2 overall record.
