NOLAN RECORDS HAT-TRICK AS
COLGATE POSTS 5-4
COMEBACK VICTORY IN OVERTIME AGAINST YALE
HAMILTON, N.Y. Junior Sean Nolan
recorded a natural hat-trick and scored the
game-winning goal just 53 seconds into the
overtime session to lead Colgate to a 5-4
comeback victory against Yale in the first game
of the Quarterfinal round series in the ECAC
Men's Ice Hockey Championships.
Yale took a 3-0 lead midway through the second
period on first-period markers by Paul Lawson and
Jeff Brow, and Keith Fitzpatrick's goal at 12:50
in the second.
However, Colgate was able to cut the lead to
3-2 at the end of the second period on
back-to-back power-play goals from Darryl
Campbell (his 16th goal of the year) and Hobey
Baker Memorial Award candidate Andy McDonald (his
21st marker of the season).
Brow rebuilt the lead to 4-2 just 35 seconds
into the third period with his 10th goal of the
year. However, the two-goal lead was not as
comfortable a cushion as the Bulldogs though it
would be as Nolan took the game over himself with
three-straight goals to give Colgate the victory.
Nolan scored the first of his three goals at
3:39 of the third from Scooter Smith. He then his
second marker of the game on the power-play
tipping in a Cory Murphy slapper from the middle
of the ice just inside the blueline. Nolan capped
off his performance with the game-winner on shot
from the right side of the net. It was a 3-on-2
for the Red Raiders with Murphy finding McDonald
streaking up the right side and then McDonald
found Nolan who slipped it past Yale's Lombard.
Nolan's hat-trick was the first for Colgate
since Campbell recorded three markers,
coincidentally enough, against Yale in the second
game of the 1998-99 Quarterfinals of the ECAC
Championships.
Lombard finished with 37 saves in the loss,
while Shep Harder stopped 20 shots to record his
19th win of the season.
Both teams will face off once again tomorrow
at 7 p.m. in Starr Rink, the best-of-three series
in the quarterfinal round of the ECAC
Championships will continue through Sunday, Mar.
12 (if necessary).
