COLGATE'S RUN FOR FIRST
PLACE IN THE ECAC HALTED
WITH 2-2 OT TIE AGAINST PRINCETON
HAMILTON, N.Y. The Colgate men's ice hockey
team had its run for first place in the ECAC
regular-season title race halted after a 2-2
overtime tie against Princeton Friday night.
The tie puts Colgate more than a game behind
first place St. Lawrence, so Colgate will finish
second and will most likely host Yale in the
quarterfinals of the ECAC Championships on Mar.
10-12. Colgate closes out the season against Yale
on Saturday in Starr Rink.
Colgate (20-7-2, 13-4-2 ECAC) took the early
lead when Hobey Baker Memorial Award candidate
Andy McDonald scored his 18th goal of the season
on a power-play at 15:13 of the first period from
Cory Murphy and Mike Marostega. Murphy found
McDonald who skated just outside the crease and
slid the puck past Princeton goaltender Dave
Stathos.
Princeton (10-13-4, 8-8-4 ECAC) evened the
score with an even-strength marker at 16:09 of
the second period when George Parros netted his
third goal of the season from Scott Prime.
Murphy put Colgate back on top with its second
power-play goal of the game at 6:28 of the third
period from Darryl Campbell and McDonald.
McDonald passed the puck cross-ice to Campbell
who found Murphy in the slot and he scored his
eighth goal of the season.
Princeton's Brad Parsons scored the game-tying
goal at 13:15 of the third from Ethan Doyle and
Neil McCann. Parsons dug as pass from Doyle out
of the corner and got free from the Colgate
defender skating to the left post and backhanded
the puck past Colgate goalie Shep Harder for his
11th goal of the year.
Harder stopped 34 shots and allowed the two
goals, while Stathos recorded 25 saves and
allowed two goals.
