COLGATE RECORDS SEASON
SWEEP
OF DARTMOUTH WITH 6-2 VICTORY
HANOVER, N.H. The
Colgate University men's ice hockey team scored
three goals in the final three minutes of the
second period and four total in the period to
record a 6-2 victory at Dartmouth in ECAC action
Friday night.
The Red Raiders victory completed the season
sweep of Dartmouth and is their fifth season
series sweep in the ECAC this season. Colgate has
recorded sweeps of Brown, Clarkson, Cornell,
Dartmouth and Rensselaer.
Colgate gained no ground on first-place St.
Lawrence which defeated Union 2-1. The Saints
play at Rensselaer on Saturday, while Colgate is
idle until next Friday, Mar. 3 when they host
Princeton at Starr Rink.
Dartmouth got on the board first with Jamie
Harrington's goal at 7:48 of the first off
assists from Mike Maturo and Michael Byrne.
Colgate evened the game when Darryl Campbell
pounded in a rebound off an Andy McDonald shot at
14:06. McDonald and Mike O'Malley were credited
with helpers on Campbell's 14th goal of the
season.
Dartmouth retook the lead 2-1 with 18:36 to
goal in the first when Ryan Burkhart wristed a
shot just inside the right post past Shep Harder.
Harder allowed just two goals and stopped 29
shots on the evening to improve to 17-5-1 overall
and 11-4-1 in ECAC action.
Colgate's four-goal second period was keyed by
the Red Raiders first line of McDonald, Sean
Nolan and Kevin Johns, which scored two goals and
had three assists in the period. Chad MacDonald
scored his eighth goal of the season to initiate
the outburst and even the score at 2-2 just 2:21
into the second period. Erkki Rajamaki kept the
puck in the Dartmouth zone and dropped it to
Bryan Long who wristed a shot from the point
which MacDonald deflected past Big Green goalie
Nick Boucher.
Nolan scored his 14th marker of the year at
17:17 to give Colgate a 4-2 lead. P.J. Yedon
added his fifth of the season off an assist from
Sam Sturgis at 18:23 and then Johns closed out
the second period outburst at 19:24 with his
ninth goal of the year from McDonald. McDonald
stole a pass and found Johns who was streaking
down the ice, then Johns carried it past the
defenseman and backhanded it top shelf past
Boucher.
Colgate added a goal in the third period when
from Campbell, his second of the game and 15th of
the season with assists to Nolan and Mike
Marostega.
