COLGATE OFFENSE EXPLODES IN 9-3 DEMOLITION OF UNION

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Andy McDonald, Sean Nolan, Darryl Campbell each scored two goals and added assists to lead the Colgate University men’s ice hockey team to a 9-3 demolition of Union in ECAC action Saturday night.

Chad MacDonald opened the scoring for Colgate 10:12 into the first period on a power-play marker from Bryan Long and Kevin Johns. P.J. Yedon added his fourth goal of the year at the 17:52 mark from Ben Bryce and Brad D’Arco to give Colgate a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period.

After the results of Friday’s game, Colgate secured home ice for the ECAC playoffs and is still alive in the hunt for the regular-season championship after Brown defeated St. Lawrence 6-0 this evening. Colgate now trails first-place St. Lawrence by one game in the ECAC standings.

The Red Raiders (19-7-1, 12-4-1 ECAC) continued their offensive onslaught building a 5-0 lead midway through the second period on goals by Campbell, Nolan, and McDonald, respectively.

The nine-goal effort was the largest offensive output for the Red Raiders since Jan. 11, 1998 when they defeated Merrimack 10-7.

Union broke into the scoring column with an unassisted goal by Jeff Sproat at 13:13. However, McDonald scored his second goal of the game on the power-play 39 seconds into the third period to make the lead 6-1. McDonald, currently sixth in the US College Hockey Online balloting for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award now has 17 goals on the season and his season point total stands at 39 (17-22-39).

Etienne Morin, Campbell and Nolan scored the final three goals for Colgate to prevail 9-3. Also posting strong evenings for Colgate were Kevin Johns with three helpers and Long with two assists.

Colgate was 3-for-9 on the power-play on the evening, while the Red Raider penalty-kill stopped Union’s four power-play chances on the night.

Shep Harder stopped 18 shots and allowed two goals, to record a career-high 16th overall win this season (16-5-1) and 10th in the ECAC (10-4-1), while Brandon Snee let in eight goals and recorded 32 saves in the loss. He drops to 7-19-1 overall and 5-11-1 in ECAC play. Jason Lefevre relieved Harder and recorded seven saves while allowing one goal. Marc Wise came in for Snee stopping three shots and allowing one goal.

The Red Raiders travel to Hanover, N.H. to face Dartmouth on Friday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m., while Union hosts St. Lawrence next Friday at 7 p.m.
