228-7566 COLGATE EXTENDS
STREAK TO FIVE AFTER 3-1 WIN AT BROWN
PROVIDENCE, R.I. Chad
MacDonald hit in his own rebound at the 14:11
mark of the third perod to give the 10th-ranked
Colgate University men's ice hockey team a 3-1
victory against Brown extending the Red Raiders'
win streak to five games.
Tied a 1-1, freshman Erkki Rajamaki worked
hard on the boards and got the puck to Pat
Varecka behind the Brown goal who found MacDonald
in front of the net and MacDonald pounded in his
own rebound for his sixth marker of the season.
Sean Nolan gave Colgate a 1-0 lead at the 6:03
mark of the third period with his ninth goal of
the season. Cory Murphy slid a rink-wide pass to
Mike Marostega on the left point and he blasted a
slapshot that Nolan tipped from the slot.
Joe Janjevich scored the equalizer hitting in
his own rebound on a breakaway receiving a pass
from Jason Wilson at the 10:35 mark of the third
period.
Andy McDonald added his 12th marker of the
season and his 54th career goal to ice the game
with the empty-netter at 19:44.
The Red Raiders (16-6-0, 9-3-0 ECAC) lacked
intensity in the first period coming out sluggish
with two failed power-play opportunities and
mounted few serious chances in the first. It was
a similar performance to the one Colgate turned
in against Brown (4-15-1, 2-11-0) in the first
meeting this season at Starr Rink, except that
Jason Lefevre was on in the net for Colgate
stopping all seven shots on goal he faced in the
first.
Lefevre recorded his third victory of the
season improving to 3-2-0 overall and 2-0-0 in
ECAC play stopping 23 of 24 shots on goal on the
night.
Colgate did have one strong opportunity with a
goal by Darryl Campbell at the 14:00 mark of the
first period, but his goal was disallowed after
Brown goaltender Scott Stirling pulled the net
off its moorings before the goal was scored and
was whistled for a delay of game.
The game was of a different variety than the
past 11 meetings in which the two teams combined
for 101 goals. Both teams struggled offensively
at even-strength and on the power-play in the
first two periods ending in a scorless tie
through two periods.
Colgate played with the services of McDonald
and Nolan who were to serve suspensions stemming
from an incident at the end of the Cornell game
last Saturday. The two players were allowed to
play after Colgate appealed Wednesday's decision
by the ECAC office to suspend the players for
fighting against Cornell. McDonald and Nolan will
remain eligible to play until the appeal is heard
by the ECAC executive committee of athletic
directors Bob Ducatte (Rensselaer), Bill Cleary
(Harvard) and Gary Walters (Princeton). These
three athletic directors will review the incident
on videotape and decide whether to maintain the
ruling of the league office. If the decision is
not overturned, the two players will likely miss
Friday's the St. Lawrence game. Shep Harder sat
out his one-game suspension for fighting against
Brown.
The Red Raiders resume action tomorrow when
they face Harvard at 7 p.m. in Cambridge.
