COLGATE RECORDS FIRST SERIES SWEEP OF CORNELL
SINCE 1994-95 SEASON WITH 4-2 VICTORY

ITHACA, N.Y. – After shutting out Cornell on Friday night for the first time since the 1994-95 season, the 10th-ranked Colgate men’s ice hockey team recorded its first season-sweep of Cornell since the same 1994-95 season with a 4-2 come from behind victory in the home-and-home ECAC series Saturday night.

The Red Raiders entered the game 4 for its last 55 power-play opportunities, but got healthy on the man-advantage going 3-for-8 on the night. Colgate jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 12:17 mark of the first period when Kevin Johns scored his seventh marker of the season on Colgate’s second power-play opportunity of the game. Bryan Long struck a slapshot from the right point which Johns tipped in from the high slot for the power-play goal. Jeff Potter also received an assist on the goal setting up Long’s slapshot.

Shep Harder picked up right where he left off the night before making 12 saves in the first period including a strong save on Frank Kovac at the 12:44 mark following the goal. Kovac stole a pass just inside the blueline and got a shot off that Harder turned away with his pad to the right of the net.

Harder was hard-pressed in the second period with shots on goal and to his body after the whistle. He was struck in the head by Krzysztof Wieckowski at the 2:37 mark of the second period following a save, which was definitely an indication of how physical the second period was. The hit led to a scuffle after the play with Colgate players coming to Harder’s rescue and a failed Colgate power-play opportunity.

Two minutes later, Colgate came to his rescue again with pushing after the whistle, this time Erkki Rajamaki was whistled for the penalty. This gave Cornell the power-play chance and they were able to push the goal home when David Krozier hit a shot that Harder got a piece of and it trickled over the line for the goal at 5:30 of the second.

The Big Red gave Colgate all they could handle in the second period and after breaking through Harder’s armor for the first time in over 85 minutes of action, Cornell was able to take a 2-1 lead three minutes later at the 8:40 mark of the second. David Adler scored his fourth goal of the season receiving a pass from Ryan Moynihan and he rifled a shot from the right point that found the top right corner of the net. Harder was screened on the play and didn’t even have an opportunity to put his glove on the puck.

While the Big Red offense was able to solve Harder in the second, the defense seemed to be everywhere the Red Raiders were in the second period limiting Colgate to just three shots on goal and seven total in the first two periods.

After being dominated in the second Colgate came out with much more intensity in the third and was rewarded with three third-period markers. The Red Raiders got their second and third power-play goals of the game from Darryl Campbell at the 1:58 mark to tie the game and Andy McDonald with the game-winning goal at 16:22.

On Campbell’s goal Cory Murphy took a shot from the top of the left face-off circle that Sean Nolan got a stick on and deflected off Cornell goaltender Matt Underhill’s pad and right to Campbell on the right side of the net and he deposited it in the wide-open net.

Following Campbell’s goal, Harder made a game-saving stop with a cartwheel glove save robbing Moynihan at the 3:27 mark of the third period. Moynihan split two Colgate defensemen and had a point-blank shot in front of the net.

McDonald’s goal came after he settled a shot by Nolan that Underhill saved and he skated from the right side of the net in the high slot and wristed a shot to the top left corner of the goal.

Etienne Morin iced the game with a goal at the 17:17 mark after Campbell sent a puck down the boards in Cornell’s zone and Mike O’Malley sent it to Morin on the right side of the net. Morin struck a shot that Underhill saved, but he was able to pound in his own rebound.
