COLGATE RECORDS FIRST SHUTOUT VICTORY AGAINST
CORNELL SINCE 1994-95 BEHIND HARDER 4-0

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The 10th-ranked Colgate University men’s hockey team recorded its first shutout victory against Cornell since the 1994-95 season behind senior goaltender Shep Harder 4-0 in ECAC action Friday night.

The Red Raiders jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period with goals by Sean Nolan (Dorcehster, Ont.) and Erkki Rajamaki (Vantaa, Finland). Nolan’s marker came off a feed from leading Red Raider scorer Andy McDonald (Strathroy, Ont.) who slid a pass to Nolan who hammered it in at the 2:46 mark of the first period. Rajamaki scored his first career collegiate goal hitting in his own rebound off goaltender Matt Underhill at 7:03. Scooter Smith (Calgary, Alb.) and Chad MacDonald (Oshawa, Ont.) each recorded helpers on Rajamaki’s goal.

Colgate’s Mike Marostega (London, Ont.) one-timed a pass from P.J. Yedon to extend the lead to 3-0 6:50 into the second period. Cornell pulled Underhill and brought in Chris Gartman who played the remainder of the game. Underhill recorded 15 saves on the night., while Gartman finished with 18.

Preserving the lead and recording the shutout was Harder who stopped 16 shots on goal in the second period alone and finished with 31 saves on the night. Not only was the shutout victory impressive for the Red Raiders, but it was also Harder’s fourth shutout of the season which set the single-season record for shutouts. Harder eclipsed the former record of three set by Jeff Cooper during the 1984-85 season. Harder improves to 12-4-0 overall and 6-3-0 in the ECAC.

Ben Bryce (Carleton Place, Ont.) closed out the scoring slipping one past Gartman from the left face-off circle at the 4;53 mark of the third period. McDonald registered his second helper of the night and Kevin Johns also assisted on the goal.

It was McDonald’s ninth multiple-point game of the season, while P.J. Yedon has recorded at least a point in six of his last seven contests.
