COLGATE FALLS TO HARVARD, 7-1
HAMILTON, N.Y.—Tim Pettit scored
two goals to lead the Harvard men's ice hockey team to a 7-1 win over
Colgate Saturday night at Starr Rink.
After a scoreless first period, Harvard (5-2-0, 5-2-0 ECAC) tallied two quick goals in the second stanza when Pettit and defenseman Noah Welch scored within a minute of each other. This would be all the Crimson would need, as goaltender Dov Grumet-Morris allowed only one goal on 26 shots faced. Goals from Kenny Smith at 11:33 of the second period, Aaron Kim at 14:14 of the second period, and a second by Pettit 40 seconds into the third period extended Harvard's lead to 5-0 before Colgate (5-7-1, 2-4-0) managed to get on the board. Raider freshman J.R. Bria registered his first career collegiate goal in the losing effort at 14:45 of the third period. Harvard peppered the Raider net and goalie David Cann, who stopped 36 shots. The Crimson also proved efficient on the power play, scoring three times on six chances. The game turned ugly when Harvard center Brett Nowak was issued a game misconduct penalty for spearing. The penalty carries with it an automatic game suspension which takes effect in the Crimson's next match against Boston University. Colgate's Kyle Wilson later delivered an ugly slash that warranted a five minute major penalty. Charlie Johnson and Tom Cavanagh tallied Harvard's final two goals, both on the power play created by Wilson's major.
