COLGATE FALLS TO YALE, 6-1

November 9, 2002

HAMILTON, N.Y.--Chris Higgins scored two goals as the Yale men's hockey team downed Colgate 6-1 Saturday night at Star Rink in ECAC action.  The Bulldogs improve to 1-2-0 overall and even their conference mark at 1-1-0 while the Raiders drop to 4-4-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the ECAC.

The Bulldogs added the final two goals in the game with Colgate goaltender Dave Cann, who came into the contest in the third period in relief of starter Steve Silverthorn, on the bench as the Raiders opted to pull him and gain a one-man advantage.  Yale's Joe Zappala slid the puck into the net at 19:37, capping the score at 6-1.  Higgins scored his second goal with an open net at 18:23.

Nick Deschenes pushed the Yale lead to 4-1 at 3:50 in the third period when he ripped a wrist-shot from the top of the circle and beat Silverthorn over his stick-side shoulder.

Colgate's Adam Mitchell pulled the Raiders within 3-1 with a power-play goal at 19:03, but it was all the offense Colgate could muster.

Yale scored two goals in less than a one-minute span in the first period.  Higgins took a pass at the top of the crease from Deschenes and beat Silverthorn at 9:50 in the first to put the Bulldogs up 1-0.  Evan Wax scored on a wrap-around goal 35 seconds later to push Yale's lead to 2-0.

Peter Cohen made 19 stops for the Bulldogs.  Cann made five saves in just over 14 minutes after Silverthorn stopped 14 shots in the first 43 minutes of the game.
