COLGATE EDGES SACRED HEART, 3-2 Game Statistics HAMILTON, N.Y.--Sophomore
goaltender Steve Silverthorn’s sprawling save on a penalty shot with 24
seconds remaining in the third period secured the
Colgate men's ice hockey victory over Sacred
Heart, 3-2 Friday night at Starr Rink. Junior Paul Kelley’s shorthanded goal midway through the second period gave the Raiders a one goal lead that they would ride to their first victory on the season. Kelley redirected a waist-high pass sent by junior Kyle Doyle past Pioneer goalie Eddy Ferhi, who made 37 saves in a losing effort. After an even first period, Colgate sophomore Adam Mitchell scored a power play goal to give the Raiders their second lead of the game. Colgate finished 1-4 with the extra skater. Sacred Heart’s Brad Holland would tie the game twelve minutes later when he chipped a rebound from Barclay Folk’s shot into the back of the net. The game remained tied for only a minute. Sophomore Dmitry Yashin scored the game’s first goal with a hard slap shot to the stick side of Ferhi. The goal marked the fourth consecutive time the Raiders have scored first this season. Chuck Metcalfe would notch the Pioneer’s first goal later that period. Silverthorn, the game’s first star, finished the night with 31 saves, a career high. The victory was the first in his collegiate career.
