COLGATE HOSTS SECOND MAAC OPPONENT IN AS MANY WEEKS AS SACRED HEART COMES
TO TOWN FRIDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHT
Scouting the Pioneers
Sacred Heart tied Bemidji
State last weekend by scores of 1-1 on Friday night and 2-2 Saturday
night. Three different players scored for the Pioneers in sophomore
forward Garrett Larson, senior defenseman Les Hrapchak and junior forward
Chuck Metcalfe.
Sacred Heart was 16-14-4 last season with a 15-8-3 mark in the MAAC for
third place. The Pioneers return 23 letterwinners from last year’s squad
while losing four.
Predicted to finish third in the MAAC behind Mercyhurst and Quinnipiac,
Sacred Heart’s Martin Paquet was named the MAAC Preseason Player of the
Year along with Adam Tackaberry from Mercyhurst. In addition, Eddy Ferhi
was named the MAAC Preseason Goalie of the Year.
Last Time
Out
Colgate defeated Sacred Heart 8-2 on
October 14, 2000. Senior Scooter Smith tallied two goals while seniors
Brad D'Arco and P.J. Yedon and junior Rob Brown added assists. Junior
goaltender David Cann made seven saves in 20 minutes of action. Former
Raiders Chad MacDonald and Sean Nolan also tallied two goals in the rout
while Jason Lefevre made nine saves for the win.
ECAC Honors For Smith
Senior Scooter Smith was named the ECAC Player of the Week Monday for his
one-goal, two-assist performance against Connecticut last weekend. It is
Smith’s first Player of the Week honor.
The 1,000 Save Club
Junior goaltender David Cann became
just the 15th Colgate goaltender to achieve 1,000 saves in Saturday
night’s loss to Connecticut. Cann needed 12 saves entering the game and
finished with 18.
The
Number One Not Too Kind to the Raiders
Colgate lost its third straight
game Saturday night by one goal. Last season, the Raiders played in 13
one-goal games, seven of which were wins.
Multiple Point Games For
Smith, Doyle, Yashin
Senior Scooter Smith,
junior Kyle Doyle and sophomore Dmitry Yashin all recorded multiple point
games in Saturday night’s loss to UConn. Smith tallied a goal and two
assists, while Doyle added two goals and Yashin had a goal and an assist.
The Returning Raiders
-10 Forwards, including top
eight scorers.
-5 defensemen, including senior captain Steve Silversides and junior
assistant captain Rob Brown, an honorable mention all-ECAC selection last
spring.
-2 goaltenders in junior David Cann and sophomore Steve Silverthorn.
Meet the Captains
Senior Steve Silversides will serve
as captain of the 2002-03 squad while senior Brad D’Arco and junior Rob
Brown have been elected assistant captains.
Mormina Selected In 2002
NHL Entry Draft
Sophomore defenseman Joey Mormina was selected in the sixth round by the
Philadelphia Flyers with the 193rd pick in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. He is
the highest Raider drafted since 1991 when Bruce Gardiner was selected in
the sixth round with the 131st overall pick by the St. Louis Blues.
Scoping out the Smyths
Although freshmen Jon and Ryan Smyth have
the same last name the two players are not related.
The Silver Lining
Even though sophomore Steve
Silverthorn picked up the loss in the 6-5 double overtime loss to
Nebraska-Omaha on October 11, the goaltender make a career-high 44 saves,
including 18 in double overtime to keep the Raiders in the game. It was
Silverthorn’s second collegiate start.
Up Next
Colgate travels to Ohio next weekend for
games at Findlay on Friday, Nov. 1 and at Ohio State on Sunday, Nov. 3.
