COLGATE MEN'S HOCKEY DROPS HEARTBREAKER TO NEBRASKA-OMAHA 6-5 IN DOUBLE OVERTIME IN MAVERICK STAMPEDE

October 11, 2002

OMAHA, Neb.—Nebraska-Omaha’s Scotty Turner scored a power play goal at 18:45 of sudden death overtime to lift the Mavericks to a 6-5 overtime win over the Colgate University men’s ice hockey team Friday night at Omaha Civic Auditorium in the Maverick Stampede Tournament.

Colgate freshman Eric Main was called for holding the stick at 18:33 to put the Mavericks on the power play and set up Turner’s heroics. Turner’s goal was a rebound off of a Greg Zanon shot that trickled through the legs of sophomore Steve Silverthorn.

Down 5-1 in the middle of the second period, Colgate (0-1) scored four straight goals including three on the power play, to tie the game 5-5 and force a five-minute overtime period. A 20 minute sudden death overtime was then played after both teams did not score.

The Raiders got on the board just over two minutes into the contest when senior forward Brad D’Arco shot a centering pass to senior P.J. Yedon who shot it through the legs of Nebraka-Omaha goalie Dan Ellis. The Mavericks responded one minute later on a goal from Greg Zanon. UNO took a 2-1 lead at 18:04 on a goal from Jason Jaworski.

In the second period, the Mavericks (1-0) went up 5-1 on three straight goals from Micah Sanford at 1:29, Brett Davis at 2:16 and Joe Pereira at 7:14. Colgate cut the lead 5-2 at 11:05 on a goal from junior Paul Kelley. Junior Kyle Doyle scored Colgate’s first power play goal of the season at 16:38 as sophomore Adam Mitchell fed Doyle on a breakaway to make the score 5-3. Colgate come within one just 21 seconds later as Mitchell scored a power play goal of his own. Senior Scooter Smith evened the game 5-5 at 18:42 on the third power play goal of the game.

Both teams battled through a scoreless third period as Silverthorn made 10 saves and Ellis’ reliever Brian Haaland finished with six saves.

Silverthorn, making his second collegiate start, amassed a career-high 44 saves while Ellis finished with 13 stops and Haaland recorded 11.

Colgate meets No. 6 Michigan State on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. in the consolation game. The Spartans lost to No. 2 Denver earlier in the day by a 5-0 score. Nebraska-Omaha and Denver play at 9 p.m. for the tournament title.

NOTES:  At 83:45, this game is the fourth longest game in Colgate hockey history.
