DARTMOUTH DEFEATS COLGATE 3-1 IN QUARTERFINALS OF THE ECAC TOURNAMENT March 15, 2003 HANOVER, N.H.(AP) -- Lee Stempniak scored a hat trick, leading Dartmouth to a 3-1 victory over Colgate Saturday and forcing the deciding third game in ECAC quarterfinal action Saturday night at Thompson Arena. With the series tied, 1-1, Dartmouth (18-12-1) and Colgate (17-18-4) will faceoff Sunday at 7 p.m. to determine which team will advance to the ECAC semi-finals at Albany's Pepsi Arena on Friday, March 14. After a scoreless opening period, Stempniak potted a power play goal at the 6:14 mark of the second, staking Dartmouth to a 1-0 lead. The Raiders answered with 1:55 left in the period when Adam Mitchell took a feed from Scooter Smith and scored on a partial breakaway for a 1-1 tie. With 8:21 gone in the third period, Stempniak rushed the Colgate zone and was pulled to the ice by a Raider defender. As he was falling, Stempniak spun around and in an acrobatic move, batted the puck out of the air past Colgate goalie Steve Silverthorn for the gamewinning goal.
With 48 seconds left in regulation and Silverthorn pulled in favor of
the extra skater, Stempniak completed the hat trick with a shot into
the empty net to account for the 3-1 score.
Silverthorn finished with 41 saves, while Dartmouth's Nick Boucher stopped 19 shots. Dartmouth senior Pete Summerfelt assisted on all three Stempniak goals and freshman Mike Ouellette added a pair of assists.
