COLGATE DEFEATS DARTMOUTH 4-3 IN FOUR OVERTIMES IN ECAC QUARTERFINALS
March 14, 2003HANOVER, N.H.(AP) -- Colgate’s
Kyle Wilson scored with 1:05 elapsed in the fourth overtime period,
sending the Raiders to a 4-3 victory over Dartmouth in Friday night’s
first game of the ECAC quarterfinal series at Thompson Arena.
The game, which lasted a total of 121:05, was the longest in school
history for either team.
Dartmouth goalie Nick Boucher made the initial save on Colgate’s P.J.
Yedon, but Wilson flicked the loose puck into the net early in the
fourth extra session.
The win gave Colgate (17-17-4) a 1-0 lead in the best of three series
that will resume on Saturday night at Dartmouth’s Thompson Arena.
Dartmouth (17-12-1) opened the scoring in the first period on Hugh
Jessiman’s power play goal at 6:14. The Raiders tied the game at 1-1 on
a power play opportunity when Scooter Smith scored at 9:57.
Just 28 seconds into the second stanza, the Big Green regained the lead
when Jessiman netted his second of the night. Colgate took advantage of
another power play opportunity at 10:15 when Adam Mitchell made it 2-2.
It was more of the same in the third period. Dartmouth’s Trevor Byrne
potted a power play goal at the 10:05 mark before Colgate’s Ryan Smyth
forced the overtime with 5:59 remaining in regulation.
The two teams played an additional 61:05 minutes of hockey before Wilson
decided the game.
For Dartmouth, Boucher made a school record 66 saves.
The Big Green’s Lee Stempniak and Yedon each had three assists on the night.
