YEDON'S HEROICS PROPEL COLGATE TO A 3-1 OVERTIME WIN OVER ST. LAWRENCE IN FIRST ROUND OF ECAC TOURNAMENT

March 8, 2003

HAMILTON, NY—P.J. Yedon scored the game winning goal at 16:46 in overtime to propel the Colgate men's hockey team to a 3-2 win over St. Lawrence Saturday night at Starr Rink. The game was second of a three game series in the ECAC Tournament

J.R. Bria passed the puck up to a streaking Yedon whose slapshot beat St. Lawrence goalie Kevin Ackley top shelf.

"This one was definitely extra special," said Yedon. "We get to extend the season. I didn't want to be sitting home tomorrow doing nothing."

The best-of-three series now stands at 1-1, with the final game taking place once again at Starr Rink on Sunday.

"Tonight, as crazy as it sounds, was actually fun," said Colgate head coach Don Vaughan. "It was fun to be in a game like that. That's what college hockey is about. We're very thrilled to get the win and be playing again tomorrow."

After sixty minutes of grueling action, the two teams needed extra time to break a 2-2 deadlock. Saint T. J. Trevelyan capitalized on a breakaway at 9:47 into the third period to send the game into overtime.

But Yedon's second overtime goal of the season gave Colgate (15-17-4, 9-10-3 ECAC) its first playoff victory in three years.

The Raiders scored twice in the second period to erase a 1-0 deficit after the opening frame. Yedon tallied his first of the night by finishing a 2-on-1 odd man rush just 47 seconds into the period. Kyle Wilson notched his first career playoff goal 13 minutes later with a backhand shot shelved high over an outstretched Ackley.

St. Lawrence (11-20-5, 7-12-3) bolted out to an early 1-0 lead with a power play goal by defenseman Ryan Glenn. The Saints converted once on their four chances with the extra man, while killing off all five Raider power plays.

Colgate goalie Steve Silverthorn turned aside 26 shots in earning his first career playoff victory while Ackley finished with 36.
