SMITH LEADS COLGATE PAST UNION, 5-1 Friday, Feb. 21, 2003 Contact: Kerry Van Malderghem (315) 228-7566 HAMILTON, N.Y.—Scooter Smith's two-goal effort spurred the Colgate men's ice hockey team to a 5-1 victory over Union Friday night at Starr Rink.
Colgate's normally anemic offense poured in
five goals for only the third time this season, capped by P.J.
Yedon's goal midway through the final period. After leading by only two goals heading in to the third frame, Matt Nicholson put the game out of reach with a drive that originated at his own blue line to give the Raiders a 4-1 edge at 3:45. Colgate built its lead in the second period on the back of Smith. The senior blasted a puck low to the glove side of Union goaltender Kris Mayotte at 9:35 of the second period, and followed up with his 19th goal of the season only a little over a minute later. The lone goal of the first period came
when freshman Jon Smyth tallied his first career goal with a high shot
over the shoulder of Mayotte at 13:23. |
