COLGATE STUNS No. 4 CORNELL 2-1 IN OVERTIME HAMILTON, N.Y.--Adam Mitchell's controversial goal at 3:11 in overtime propelled the Colgate men's hockey team to a 2-1 upset win over Cornell Thursday night in front of a sold out crowd at Starr Rink. Colgate picks up two crucial conference points and improves to 9-13-3 overall and 4-7-2 in the ECAC while the Big Red, who entered the contest ranked No. 4 in the nation, falls to 16-4 overall and 11-2 in conference play. Referee Alex Dell initially waived off the
goal, claiming that the net was jarred loose before the puck crossed the
line. However, after conferring with Linesman Andy Petrus, who was
positioned directly behind the right post, Dell reversed his call and
allowed the game winner. Cornell scored the game's initial goal at 1:48 in the first period when Shane Hayes took a pass from Sam Paolini and beat Raider goaltender Steve Silverthorn, giving the Big Red an early 1-0 advantage. The Hayes goal was all Silverthorn would allow, stopping the next 30 shots of the contest, including a number from close range. Less than five minutes later, Colgate's Dmitry Yashin evened the score when he beat LeNeveu glove-side for a power-play goal at 6:48 in the first period. LeNeveu finished with 16 saves on the night, while Silverthorn recorded 31 total stops for Colgate. |
