COLGATE FALLS TO CLARKSON, 3-0 Saturday, Jan. 25 HAMILTON, N.Y.--Clarkson goaltender Mike Walsh recorded his third straight shutout over Colgate, as the Golden Knights men's hockey team blanked the Raiders 3-0 Saturday night at Starr Rink.
Colgate appeared to find a way
past Walsh midway through the second period when Rob Brown banged home a
rebound off of an Adam Mitchell shot. But referee Scott Hansen blew the
play dead on a delayed penalty against the Knights, ruling that a
Clarkson defenseman had controlled the puck prior to the rebound chance. "In [Hansen's] mind, he is absolutely, 100% correct," said a frustrated Vaughan. "He said that, in his mind, the defenseman had possession of the puck. Unbelievable. Turning point in the game. But in his mind, he thinks he made the right call." On the ensuing Colgate power play, Mitchell failed to hold the Knights zone, and Trevor Edwards broke in on Raider goaltender David Cann for a shorthanded breakaway goal. The score gave the Knights a 3-0 edge at 13:52, a lead they would hold throughout a scoreless third period. Clarkson got on the board early when Matt Syroczynski tapped a rebound past Cann, who had appeared to turn away a 2-on-0 odd man rush at 7:18 of the first period. The Golden Knights extended their lead to 2-0 at 7:43 of the second period when Chris Brekelmans unloaded a slap shot from the left circle through the legs of the helpless netminder early in the second frame. Cann stopped 27 shots in the losing effort, while Walsh fended off all 21 shots produced by the Raiders.
