COLGATE SKATES TO 3-3 TIE WITH ST. LAWRENCE

For Immediate Release
Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003

CANTON, N.Y. – Freshman defenseman J.R. Bria scored the game-tying goal with three seconds left in the game and Scooter Smith added two goals as the Colgate men’s hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie with St. Lawrence Sunday night at Appleton Arena.

Bria fired a slapshot from the right point that went top shelf to salvage a point for the weekend. Brad D’Arco and Kyle Doyle assisted on the goal.

With the tie, Colgate ends a four-game losing skid and is now 7-11-2 overall and 2-5-1 in the ECAC while the Saints are 4-12-3 overall and 1-5-1 in league play.

St. Lawrence took an early 1-0 lead 46 seconds into the contest when Rich Peverley scored off a breakaway from John Zeiler and Kevin Ackley.

Colgate evened it up 1-1 at 12:46 when Smith scored his team-leading 12th goal of the season in between the legs of Ackley. Rob Brown assisted on the goal.

A scary moment occurred 50 seconds into the second period when freshman forward Adam Hogg went down on the right boards in front of Colgate goaltender David Cann. Hogg was carried off the ice in a stretcher.

The Saints took a 2-1 lead at 8:42 of the second period when Blair Clarence won the face off and sent it back to Jim Hakewill who fired a shot from the point past Cann.

St. Lawrence went up 3-1 at 8:59 of the third period on a goal from Ziga Petac and assisted by Tony Macri and Mike Madill.

Smith cut the lead 3-2 less than two minutes later on his second goal of the game as Adam Mitchell passed the puck up to Smith who put it past Ackley. Justin Spencer also assisted on the goal.

Ackley finished with 40 saves while Cann had 37.
