MERRIMACK RIDES SIX THIRD-PERIOD GOALS TO A 9-5 WIN OVER COLGATE IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE S.I.T.

SYRACUSE, N.Y.— Alex Sikatchev (St. Petersburg, Russia) erupted for four goals and two assists to lead Merrimack (4-7) to a 9-5 win over Colgate (3-7) in the first round of the Syracuse Invitational Tournament. Anthony Aquino (Mississauga, ONT) dished out a career-best five assists and the Warriors scored six straight goals to erase a 3-0 deficit at the Onondoga County War Memorial in Syracuse, NY.   Nick Parillo (Niskayuna, NY) and Marco Rosa (Whitby, ONT) added a pair of goals each as the Warriors advanced to the championship game on Saturday night. Dmitry Yashin (Kanata, ONT) scored two goals and Ben Bryce (Bluepoint, ONT) had a goal and two assists in the loss for Colgate.

Colgate jumped ahead with three goals in the first period. At 6:09 into the game, Yashin put back a rebound off a shot by Joey Mormina (Montreal, QUE). Adam Mitchell (Port Elgin, ONT) followed with his first of the year at 11:56, blasting a slapshot from the blue line past Exter. P.J. Yedon (Toronto, ONT) then netted a power play goal at 16:02, prompting the Warriors to replace starting goaltender Joe Exter (Cranston, RI) with Jason Wolfe (College Park, MD).

Rosa got the Warriors on the board, scoring 2:31 into the second period. Matt Foy (Mississauga, ONT) fed Rosa on the right side and the sophomore netted his second of the season. Yashin put the Colgate lead back at three with his second of the game at 5:36 of the second period.  Aquino then set up each of his linemates to keep the Warriors in the game. He fed Parillo and Sikatchev at the 13:52 and 16:50 marks respectively and Colgate went into the second break up 4-3.

Merrimack was awarded a penalty shot at the 3:52 mark of the third after Sikatchev was taken down on a breakaway, but he was unable to convert on the free opportunity. At the 5:00 mark, Sikatchev did convert with a slapshot from center to tie the game at 4-4. Exactly one minute later, Ryan Cordeiro (Somerset, MA) netted his team-leading 10th goal of the season to put the Warriors ahead for good. Rosa then netted his second of the game at the 8:59 mark. Sikatchev snagged the hat trick with the sixth straight goal for the Warriors at the 12:32 mark, giving Merrimack a two-goal cushion.

Bryce picked up his third goal of the season at the 14:48 mark before Sikatchev and Parillo put it away with goals at 15:17 and 19:55.

Wolfe allowed two goals and made 16 saves over the final 43:58 for the first win of the senior’s career. Colgate goaltender Jason Lefevre (Rome, NY) stopped 30 shots over the first 48:59 before Steve Silverthorn (Owen Sound, ONT) made six saves in relief.  Lefevre, who faced the Warriors' penalty shot in the third, became just the third Colgate goaltender to see a penalty shot, and he is the first to stop the opposing team's player.

Merrimack advances to Niagara in the championship game at 7 p.m. on Saturday while Colgate will face Mercyhurst in the consolation at 4 p.m.
