The Last Time Out
Fueled by a one-goal, one-assist night by junior Brett Nowak (New Haven, CT), the Harvard men’s hockey team completed a weekend sweep with a 6-1 victory over Colgate at Bright Hockey Center on Saturday night. With the win, Harvard head coach Mark Mazzoleni picked up

his 250th collegiate coaching victory and his 19th with the Harvard program.

After pulling out an overtime nail biter on Friday night against No. 9 Cornell, it didn’t take long for the Crimson to take a commanding lead in this contest. A mere 95 seconds into the first period, Harvard was able to penetrate deep into the Colgate zone where freshman Kenny Smith (Stoneham, MA) let loose a shot from the point which was tipped home by Jeff Stonehouse (Blenheim, ONT). Less than nine minutes later, the Crimson followed up with a short-handed tally by Dennis Packard (Kingston, PA) - a textbook 2-vs-1 break executed by Packard and Nowak. Smith added his second career goal in the waning moments of the period to put the Crimson up 3-0.

Colgate broke into the scoring column at the 7:25 mark of the second stanza when Kyle Doyle (Samia, ONT) slammed home a loose puck in front of the Harvard net. The Crimson countered seven minutes later when Nowak drove around the Raiders’ net and stuffed home a shot through the pads of starting Colgate starting netminder Jason LeFevre (Rome, NY). That tally put the Crimson up 4-1 and also marked the end of LeFevre’s night as he was pulled and replaced by sophomore David Cann (Brampton, ONT).

In addition to finding its own offensive rhythm, the Crimson was able to stimy the Raiders throughout the night. Freshman Dov Grumet-Morris (Evanston, IL), who was making his second straight start in net, picked up 20 saves on the night while the Harvard penalty-kill unit shut down seven Colgate power-play chances. Harvard tagged on two more goals in the latter stages of the third period to seal the win.

Colgate in the SIT
The Raiders won the SIT in 1999-00 for the first time since 1983 with a 3-2 victory over Niagara. Niagara is the defending tournament champion.

So Close
With the 3-2 win over Brown on November 16, head coach Don Vaughan needs just one win to reach the 100-win mark in ECAC play. He owns a career mark of 99-82-18 against conference opponents.

The 1,000 Save Club
Raider senior goaltender Jason Lefevre hit 1,000 saves in his career in the 3-2 win over Brown November 16. He becomes the 12th player in Colgate history to achieve the feat.

Two for the Road
Junior center P.J. Yedon scored his first two goals of the season in the 3-2 win over Brown. His first tally gave tied the game at 2-2 in the second period and he scored the game winner in the third period to give the Raiders the win. It was the second time in his career that Yedon amassed a two-goal game.

Leaning Toward Lefevre
Entering the season, the big question was who would emerge as the Raiders No. 1 goaltender. After two weekend’s of ECAC play, it appears as though senior goaltender Jason Lefevre has stepped in as the Raiders starter.

A Streaking Sophomore
Sophomore Kyle Doyle is currently riding a four-game point scoring streak. He scored a goal in the win over Iona, and assisted on one goal each in the loss to Rensselaer and the win over Union and scored the lone goal for the Raiders in the 6-1 loss to Harvard. It’s the longest point streak of the season for the team. He has amassed a point in six of the seven games he has appeared in.

Late Bloomers
Of Colgate’s 18 goals this season, four have come in the first period, five have come in the second period and nine have occurred in the final stanza.

Clutch Players
Of the nine third period goals, junior Scooter Smith, the team’s leading scorer, has scored three of those goals. Sophomore defenseman Rob Brown, has scored two of them, inlcuding the power play goal that won the game for the Raiders against Union.

One Sharp Shooter
Junior P.J. Yedon took three shots on goal in the 3-2 win over Brown on November 16, and two of them resulted in goals. The third shot, aimed at an empty net was just shy of another goal.

10 and Counting
Junior Scooter Smith, the team’s leading scorer needs 10 points to hit 50 career points.

Up Next
Colgate will travel to Princeton and Yale on November 30 and December 1 for two ECAC match-ups. Both games start at 7 p.m. Colgate leads the all-time series with Princeton by a 39-33-4 margin and is 38-30-2 lifetime versus Yale.
