The Engineers then hit the road for a two-game series at Minnesota-Duluth where they lost 4-3 in overtime and 6-5. Junior forward Marc Cavosie leads the team in scoring with five goals and six assists for 11 points. He has one power play goal, two shorthanded goals and a game winning goal to his credit. Senior forward Matt Murley has five goals and one assist so far this season, while junior Nolan Graham (2-3-5) and senior Andrew McPherson (0-5-5) each have five points. Goaltending has been split between a pair of sophomores in Kevin Kurk and Nathan Marsters. Rensselaer is 6/18 for .333 on the power play and 22/28 on the penalty
kill for a .786 percentage. Opponents are 6/28 on the power play against
the Engineers and 12/18 on the penalty kill. Former Colgate hockey player Dan Fridgen ‘82 will return to Starr
Rink this weekend where as a junior he helped Colgate to the NCAA
quarterfinals while leading the Raiders in goals (37), assists (31),
points (68) and penalty minutes (164). As the head coach of the Engineers,
Fridgen is 6-8-2 against Colgate with a 2-4-2 record at Starr Rink. About Silver Puck Weekend Among the returnees will be Ole Kollevoll ’45, hockey coach from 1957 to 1965, who presided over the return of Colgate hockey after a six year hiatus. Coach Kollevoll’s teams recorded 81 wins, the fourth highest total in the record books. It is unlikely that Coach Ron Ryan (1965-72) will be able to join players on his teams because he is still active in professional hockey with the Philadelphia Flyers organization. Colgate’s Silver Puck Club is a support group for men’s hockey and one of the oldest and most effective such groups in the country. Alumni, parents of hockey players and friends of Colgate hockey are welcome to attend the Saturday evening dinner. For dinner reservations, telephone Michelle Reese at 228-7570. The ’60s era, stretched to include the 1958 and 1959 teams, mark the rebirth of Colgate hockey. The 1958 team recorded a 3-6 year with no home games. Then the 1959 team, skating outdoors for the last time, showed wins over Cornell and Pennsylvania in a 2-8 season. Early signups from these years include Joe Wignot, Dave Eldon, Jack Cussen, Tom Forest, Wally Gnaedinger and Bob Meyer. Although returning players from the ‘60s skated on Colgate ice 30 or 40 years ago, they will be remembered (if not recognized) by some of their fans. They will see a rebuilding Hamilton community and a refurbished Starr Rink. Help welcome them back to Hamilton and Colgate.
Colgate used four third period goals and a two point performance by Scooter Smith to claim its first victory of the season with a 4-1 win over Iona on Saturday night at Starr Rink. The Raiders (1-4) handed the Gaels (4-1-1) their first loss of the season and in the process gave Colgate head coach Don Vaughan his 150th career victory. Paul Kelley recorded his first collegiate goal at 17:25 in the third period, giving the Raiders the 4-1 advantage. Two minutes earlier, Smith took a pass from P.J. Yedon directly in front of the crease and beat Iona goaltender Scott Galenza glove-side at 15:33 to extend the Raider lead 3-1. Kyle Doyle’s goal at 10:24 in the third gave the Raiders their first lead of the game when he took a pass from Adam Mitchell and beat Galenza making it a 2-1 contest. Colgate’s Rob Brown put the Raiders on the board at 5:36 in the third
when he ripped a slap-shot from five feet inside the blue line after
receiving the pass from Smith.
