COLGATE ENTERTAINS IONA IN A NON-CONFERENCE MATCH-UP SATURDAY NIGHT

The Series
Saturday’s game will mark the first ever meeting between the two schools.

Scouting Iona
The Gaels are currently undefeated after defeating Quinnipiac in their season opener by a score of 3-1 and then playing to a 4-4 OT draw with UConn. Iona has also defeated American International (6-3), and Quinnipiac (4-2).

Sophomore forward Kelly Bararuk (Moose Jaw, Sask.) paces the Gaels with five goals and one assist for six points through four games. Freshman forward Brent Williams (Prince George, B.C.) and senior forward Ryan Carter (Fort Nelson, B.C.) both have three goals and three assists for six points. Senior foward Rob Kellogg (Ballwin, Mo.) has one goal and five assists for six points.

Freshman goaltender Scott Galenza (Camrose, Alb.) has played in three games with a 2-0-1 record to go along with a 2.27 gaa and a .931 save percentage.

The Gaels penalty killing unit is 18-for-21 for a .857 percentage while their power play is 3-for-14 for a .214 percentage.

The Last Time Out
The University of Minnesota men’s hockey team completed its two-game sweep of Colgate University Saturday, Oct. 27 at Mariucci Arena with a 9-0 shut out of the Raiders.

Freshman goaltender Justin Johnson earned his first win and shutout as a Golden Gopher, stopping 28-of-28 shots on the night. It was the first time a Minnesota goaltender tallied a shutout in his first game since Erik Day accomplished the feat Nov. 16, 1996, versus Michigan Tech. Eleven different Minnesota skaters tallied at least one point and five different skaters had a multi-point game.

Senior assistant captain Johnny Pohl ended the night with career-highs in points and assists with his five helpers in the game. It was the first time since March 12-13, 1999 versus Alaska-Anchorage that Minnesota posted back-to-back shutouts. All four lines scored at least one point versus Colgate.

Vaughan Nears Milestone
Head coach Don Vaughan needs just one more win to record 150 career victories. His career mark is currently 149-136-27 in nine seasons at the helm of the Raiders and has a 97-81-18 mark in the ECAC.

Three Weeks, Three Different Conferences
For the third week in a row, Colgate’s opponent will come from a different conference. The Raiders’ first opponent Nebraska-Omaha is a member of the CCHA, while last week’s opponent Minnesota is a member of the WCHA. Tonight’s opponent, Iona, plays in the MAAC.

Family Ties
Freshman Dave Thomas (East Petersburg, Pa.) is not the first member of his family to play hockey at Colgate. Dave’s older sister Andrea, ‘99, was a four-year member of the women’s ice hockey team, playing on the club team for two years before the team gained varsity status her junior season. She served as an assistant captain her senior season. Andrea currently works in the admissions office at Hamilton College.

McDonald Recalled by Anaheim
Former All-America Andy McDonald was recalled by Anaheim on Monday after leading Cincinnati in scoring this season with eight points on one goal and seven assists in eight games and has the second longest current point streak in the AHL at six games. McDonald was recently named an assistant captain of the Cincinnati team.

Also, Steve Poapst has played in nine games with the Chicago Blackhawks recording one assist and six penalty minutes.

Rotating the Raiders
Entering the season, the big question was who would emerge as the Raiders No. 1 goaltender. That question still has not been answered as the Raiders enter this weekend’s game with Iona. In last weekend’s games against Minnesota, head coach Don Vaughan utilized all three goaltenders as senior Jason Lefevre started Friday night’s game and sophomore Dave Cann was in the net for Saturday night’s match-up. Freshman goaltender Steve Silverthorn saw his first action of the season on Friday night (two periods) and also played on Saturday night (one period).

Up Next
Colgate will open its ECAC schedule next weekend on Silver Puck weekend as the Raiders host Rensselaer on Friday night (7 p.m.) before entertaining Union the following night (5 p.m.).
