COLGATE'S VAUGHAN NAMED FINALIST FOR SPENCER PENROSE AWARD

WAKEFIELD, Mass.--Colgate University men's hockey coach Don Vaughan has been named one of 14 finalists for the Spencer Penrose Award given annually to the Coach of the Year in the men's ice hockey University Division. The announcement was made recently by the American Hockey Coaches Association. The winner will be announced by the AHCA at the annual convention in Naples, Fla. on Sat., April 27.  

The other finalists include: George Gwozdecky (Denver), Dick Umile (New Hampshire), Don Lucia (Minnesota), Jack Parker (Boston University), Guy Gadowsky (Alaska-Fairbanks), Red Berenson (Michigan), John Hill (Alaska-Anchorage), Paul Pearl (Holy Cross), Rand Pecknold (Quinnipiac), Mike Schafer (Cornell), Tom Serratore (Bemidji State), Tim Whitehead (Maine) and Bill Wilkinson (Wayne State).

Vaughan is in his 10th season as the head coach at Colgate and sports a 162-153-29 overall record and a 107-91-20 league mark. His teams have consistently made appearances in post-season play as the Raiders have made the ECAC playoffs nine of Vaughan's 10 years with one appearance in the NCAA Tournament. 

Vaughan recorded his 150th career victory in the 4-1 win over Iona on November 3, 2001 and his 100th career ECAC victory in the 3-2 win over Dartmouth on January 11, 2002.

Colgate finished the season with a 13-19-2 overall mark and was 10-10-2 in league play. The Raiders were eliminated from the first round of the ECAC playoffs after falling to Dartmouth 5-4 in double overtime March 8 and losing 4-1 March 9.
