SMITH LEADS MEN'S HOCKEY PAST VERMONT, 5-3

BURLINGTON, Vt.— Junior Scooter Smith scored two goals including the game winning goal and junior Brad D'Arco added three assists to lift the Colgate men’s hockey team to a 5-3 win over the Vermont Friday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

Smith’s shorthanded unassisted goal at 19:02 of the third period gave Colgate the 5-3 lead.

Smith gave Colgate (12-13-2, 9-6-2) a 4-3 lead at 9:24 of the third period off of a breakaway. Dmitry Yashin and Brad D’Arco assisted on the goal.

Vermont (3-21-2, 3-13-1) tied the game 3-3 at 8:23 of the third period on Ryan Miller’s power play goal from Mark Gouett.

Yashin’s goal at 18:42 of the second period gave Colgate a 3-2 lead as he took a pass from sophomore Kyle Doyle and one-timed it past Vermont senior goaltender Tim Peters.

Raider sophomore Rob Brown evened the game 2-2 at 12:11 as he fired a slap shot past Conshafter. Matt Nicholson and Dave Thomas assisted on the goal.

Colgate had a chance to even the score at 10:47 of the second period when the Raiders were awarded a penalty shot as a result of an infraction in the crease. However, junior P.J. Yedon could not convert the opportunity as he lost control of the puck on the right side of the net.

Vermont took a 2-1 lead at 7:56 of the second period when Patrick Sharp scored on a breakaway on an assist from Miller.

Colgate tied the game at 18:32 of the first period on a goal from senior Ben Bryce and assisted by D’Arco.

  Vermont took a 1-0 lead 30 seconds into the contest when Oriel McHugh’s slap shot went through the legs of Cann.
