COLGATE
HOSTS BROWN FRIDAY NIGHT TO BEGIN FIVE-GAME, NINE-DAY HOMESTAND
The Series
Tonight’s game marks the 53rd
meeting between the two schools with Colgate leading the series by a
36-15-1 margin. The Raiders are 19-3-1 at Starr Rink against the Bears and
have won the last seven meetings between the two schools. The last time
these two teams met in Providence, R.I. on November 16, Colgate came away
with a 3-2 victory behind two goals from junior P.J. Yedon and one from
freshman Dmitry Yashin.
Scouting the Bears
Brown, who has won four if its last
five games, is coming off a 2-1 win over UMass Lowell Tuesday night at
Tsongas Arena. Junior left wing Chris Legg scored a breakaway goal seven
minutes, 40 seconds into the third period to lead the Bears to the
victory. Junior defenseman Paul Esdale scored the other goal for Brown in
the second period which tied the game at 1-1.
Esdale leads the Bears in scoring with five goals and 10 assists for 15
points and is followed by sophomore forward Brent Robinson with three
goals and 10 assists for 13 points. Esdale and sophomore forward Adam
Saunders lead the team with three power play goals while senior defenseman
Josh Barker has two power play goals.
Sophomore goaltender Yann Danis has a 5-4-2 record
with a 1.97 goals against average and a .934 save percentage. Senior
goaltender Brian Eklund sports a 3-5 record with a 3.96 goals against
average and a .871 save percentage.
The Bears are 12/82 on the power play for 14.6 percent, and 62/79 on the
penalty kill for 78.5 percent.
Did You Know?
Colgate’s freshman class leads the
way in scoring with 30.5% of the total team points. The junior class has
28.1%, while the sophomore class checks in with 27.3%. The senior class
has 14.1% of the scoring.
ECAC Honors For Cann
Sophomore goaltender David Cann was named the ECAC Goaltender of the Week
Sunday after he backstopped the Raiders to a three point weekend at St.
Lawrence and Clarkson. In the 4-3 win over the St. Lawrence January 25,
Cann made 32 saves for his first career victory over the Saints. He earned
his first career tie in the 2-2 overtime draw with the Golden Knights
January 26 with 30 stops.
Home Sweet Home
Friday’s game against Brown begins a five-game, nine-day homestand for
the Raiders that will end on February 9 against Princeton. Colgate sports
a 4-5 record at Starr Rink this season, including its first series sweep
in two years with wins over Dartmouth (3-2) and Vermont (4-1) January
11-12.
A Long Time Coming
The 4-3 win over St. Lawrence January 25 marked the first time in five
years the Raiders have won in Appleton Areana. The last time it happened
was on January 4, 1997 as Colgate defeated the Saints by a 4-2 score.
Also, with the 2-2 tie at Clarkson January 26, the Raiders snapped a
three game losing streat to the Golden Knights.
A First Time for
Everything
Senior Bob Vandersluis picked a great time to score his first goal of the
season as his goal knotted the game at 2-2 against Clarkson and gave
Colgate three points on the weekend.
Brown Equals Career High
Sophomore defenseman Rob Brown has already equaled his career high for
points with 11 on five goals and six assists, including a goal and an
assist in the 4-3 win at St. Lawrence. Last season, Brown tallied one goal
and 10 assists in 33 games.
Spreading the Wealth
Eleven different players recorded points on the weekend with only freshman
defenseman Joey Mormina and sophomore defenseman Rob Brown tallying two
points.
Mormina Comes Through in the Clutch
Both of freshman Joey Mormina’s points against St. Lawrence were on
game-tying goals. Mormina assisted on freshman Adam Mitchell’s power
play goal that tied the game at 2-2 and then assisted on sophomore Kyle
Doyle’s goal that tied the game at 3-3.
Canisius Game Rescheduled
The Colgate-Canisius men’s hockey game originally scheduled for December
30 will take place Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. at Starr Rink.
The game was postponed due to Canisius’ ability to travel after record
snowfalls hit the Buffalo area during Christmas break. The contest now
makes up a five-game, nine-day homestand for the Raiders in early
February.
Up Next
Colgate will host Harvard Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. Harvard leads the
all-time series with Colgate by a 34-13-4 and is unbeaten in the last four
meetings (3-0-1). The last time these two teams met on November 17 at
Bright Hockey Center, Harvard pulled away with a 6-1 win.
