COLGATE TRAVELS
TO THE NORTH COUNTRY FOR GAMES WITH ST. LAWRENCE AND CLARKSON The Series Friday's game marks the 103rd meeting between the two schools with St. Lawrence leading the all-time series by a 54-47-1 margin. The last time these two teams met at Appleton, the Saints skated to a 3-1 win. St. Lawrence has won the last three games over the Raiders. Scouting the Saints St. Lawrence is coming off a weekend sweep with wins over Dartmouth (4-3) and Vermont (5-2). The Saints are 3-1 in games since the holiday break and snapped an eight-game losing skid with the win over Vermont. The weekend sweep marked the first time all season the Saints have achieved that feat. Freshman goaltender Kevin Ackley made 43 saves and sophomore Rich Peverley scored two goals and assisted on a third in the 5-2 win over Vermont. Players to watch for the Saints include freshman Stace Page, who has scored all seven of his goals and four of his five assists since playing on the special teams unit against New Hampshire in December. Page and sophomore Rich Peverley have combined for 10 goals and 12 assists in the last seven games. Eight of Page’s 11 points have come on the power play. The Saint penalty killing unit is currently ranked second in the nation and first in the ECAC at 90.2 percent. Did You Know?Colgate’s last five games have been decided by the same two scores of 4-1 and 3-2. The Scoring Summary Does Not Tell All Although it may have appeared that the Raiders did not play well in the series with Cornell last weekend, some may think otherwise. Colgate is actually playing some of its best hockey of the season right now and may have fared well last weekend if it were not for Cornell’s power play. In Friday night’s 4-1 loss, Cornell scored three power play goals and one empty netter and added two power play goals in the 3-2 loss Saturday night. School Ties Head coach Don Vaughan graduated from St. Lawrence in 1984 and played for current Saints coach Joe Marsh. Vaughan also served as an Assistant Coach at St. Lawrence from ‘86-’88 and ‘90-’92 while completing his graduate degree from ‘85-’86. St. Lawrence assistant coach Chris Wells, ‘92 served as an assistant coach at Colgate from ‘94-’98. Vaughan served as an assistant coach at St. Lawrence during Wells’ junior and senior seasons. Colgate also has ties with Clarkson, the Raiders’ Saturday night opponent as head coach Mark Morris is an ‘81 graduate of Colgate. Both of Clarkson’s assistant coaches Ron Fogarty, ‘95 and Brad Dexter, ‘96 attended Colgate and played for Vaughan. Fogarty also served as an assistant coach for the Raiders from ‘96-’98 with Wells. Also, Fogarty, Dexter and current Colgate assistant coach Andrew Dickson, ‘93, played together for two years. Another Strong Sophomore Sophomore Kyle Doyle had a strong first half of the season and his classmate Paul Kelley has been playing well since the holiday break. Kelley has recorded a point in five of Colgate’s last six games including one goal each night in the series with Cornell last weekend. He Shows He Cann Sophomore goaltender Dave Cann has proved that he is up to the task as the starting goaltender for the Raiders. After playing sparingly in the first half of the season, Cann has started the last five games and has a 3-2 record during that span. The Baby’s Starting to Wake Up After recording one point in Colgate’s first 16 games, freshman Patrick Farrell, the youngest member of the team, amassed one point in the last two games against Cornell. Three Times Is a Charm Junior Scooter Smith, the team’s leading scorer needs three points to hit 50 career points. A Long Time Coming The series sweep over Dartmouth and Vermont marked the first time in two years that the Raiders swept a series in Starr Rink. The last time it happened came on February 18-19, 2000 against Rensselaer (5-4) and Union (9-3). The 100 Club Head coach Don Vaughan recorded his 100th career ECAC victory in the 3-2 win over Dartmouth Friday, Jan. 11. Vaughan owns a career record of 101-86-18 against league opponents. Canisius Game Rescheduled The Colgate-Canisius men’s hockey game originally scheduled for December 30 will take place Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. at Starr Rink. The game was postponed due to Canisius’ ability to travel after record snowfalls hit the Buffalo area during Christmas break. The contest now makes up a five-game, nine-day homestand for the Raiders in early February. Up Next Colgate will take on Clarkson Saturday night at Cheel Arena at 7 p.m. Clarkson leads the all-time series between these two schools by a 71-37-7 margin. |
