COLGATE PLAYS HOME AND HOME WITH CORNELL THIS WEEKEND

The Series
The weekend series marks the 117th meeting between the two schools with Cornell leading the series by a 58-50-8 margin. The last time these two teams met at Starr Rink, the Big Red won the game by a 4-3 score. The last time the teams met at Lynah, they skated to a 2-2 tie on January 18, 2001.

Scouting the Big Red
Cornell (9-5-1, 5-2-1 ECAC) is currently tied for fourth place in the league with 11 points, after being picked to finish third in the preseason coaches poll (three first-place votes) and sixth in the preseason media poll.

The Big Red are coming off a 5-3 loss to Dartmouth, who is tied with them for fourth place. In that game, Stephen Baby, Krzysztof Wieckowski, and Greg Hornby picked up goals for Cornell.

Sophomore Ryan Vesce leads the Big Red with six goals and 12 assists for 18 points this year. Junior Doug Murray has scored six power play goals this season to lead the team.

Senior Matt Underhill has been a mainstay as Cornell’s backstop for four years, and this season is no different. He holds a 5-3-1 record, along with a 1.98 goals against average and .915 save percentage. Newcomer Dave LeNeveu has earned a 4-2-0 record in six starts, and owns a 1.68 goals against average and .929 save percentage.

Did You Know?
The team Colgate has faced the most in the history of the program is Cornell with 116 contests. The second leading team the Raiders have faced is Clarkson with 115.

The Last Time Out
Junior Scooter Smith scored two goals to lead the Colgate hockey team to a 4-1 win over Vermont January 12 at Starr Rink.

The Raiders (6-11, ECAC 4-4) picked up four points in the ECAC standings with their weekend sweep over Dartmouth and Vermont. Vermont is 2-13-2 overall and 2-5-1 in the league. It was the first ECAC series sweep in Starr Rink for the Raiders since the 1999-00 season.

Smith opened the scoring 40 seconds into the first period slipping the puck under Vermont’s starting goalie Shawn Conschafter. The Catamounts tied the contest at 15:43 on a goal by Oriel McHugh. McHugh fired a shot from the point that deflected off defenseman Steve Silversides through the legs of Colgate goalie David Cann.

In the second period, Ben Bryce tallied the game-winner with five seconds remaining when he shot a blast from the side boards into the net off a breakaway.

P.J. Yedon, who had one goal and one assist, upped Colgate’s advantage to 3-1 at 11:09 of the third period when he blasted a shot from the left boards, before Smith closed out the scoring with an empty net goal at 18:28.

Cann finished with 29 saves for the Raiders, while Conschafter stopped 28 shots and Mike Gomez made two saves for Vermont.

A Long Time Coming
The series sweep over Dartmouth and Vermont marked the first time in two years that the Raiders swept a series in Starr Rink. The last time it happened came on February 18-19, 2000 against Rensselaer (5-4) and Union (9-3).

Five Alive

Junior Scooter Smith, the team’s leading scorer needs five points to hit 50 career points.

Three Times a Charm
In the last two games against Dartmouth and Vermont, the Raiders scored three straight goals in each game for the win. Ironically enough, three of the goals were scored in the second period and three were scored in the final stanza.

Lucky No. 19?
In Colgate’s 19th game of the season on January 19th, freshman Patrick Farrell will celebrate his 19th birthday.

The Calling
On January 9th, former standout Bruce Gardiner earned a promotion by the New Jersey Devils, marking the fourth NHL team he has played for. Gardiner made the most of his opportunity with an assist in a 5-1 win.

The Firing Squad
Watch for Colgate to come out firing in the third period as the Raiders have scored half of their goals (20 of 40) in the final stanza.

Spreading the Wealth
Six different players found the back of the net in Colgate’s series sweep last weekend with only junior Scooter Smith tallying more than one point.

The 100 Club
Head coach Don Vaughan recorded his 100th career ECAC victory in the 3-2 win over Dartmouth Friday, Jan. 11. Vaughan owns a career record of 101-85-18 against league opponents.

Canisius Game Rescheduled
The Colgate-Canisius men’s hockey game originally scheduled for December 30 will take place Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. at Starr Rink.

The game was postponed due to Canisius’ ability to travel after record snowfalls hit the Buffalo area during Christmas break. The contest now makes up a five-game, nine-day homestand for the Raiders in early February.

Up Next
Colgate will travel to St. Lawrence and Clarkson for two games in the North Country on January 25-26. St. Lawrence leads the all-time series between these two schools by a 54-46-1 margin and Clarkson also leads the series by a 71-37-7 margin.
