COLGATE RETURNS
TO LEAGUE SCHEDULE THIS WEEKEND WHEN DARTMOUTH AND VERMONT COME TO TOWN The Series with Dartmouth Friday’s game marks the 59th meeting between the Raiders and the Big Green. Colgate leads the all-time series with Dartmouth by a 31-26-2 margin and the last time these two teams met, the Big Green handed Colgate a 4-1 loss at Starr Rink. Scouting the Big Green Dartmouth is coming off a 4-1 loss at Maine on Sunday, Jan. 6. Goaltender Dan Yacey made 30 saves but it was not enough as the Black Bears went up 2-0 before Dartmouth cut the lead 2-1. Maine responded with two more goals to give the Black Bears their 11th victory of the season. Trevor Byrne scored the lone goal for Dartmouth, who played their final non-conference game of the season. Senior forward Mike Maturo is the team’s leading scorer with nine goals and 10 assists, including four power play goals. Byrne is the second leading scorer with four goals and nine assists for 13 points and junior forward Kent Gillings has three goals and 10 assists for 13 points. Junior Nick Boucher and sophomore Darren Gastrock have split time in net as Boucher sports a 4-4-1 record with a 3.57 goals against average and a .868 save percentage while Gastrock is 3-1 with a 2.31 gaa and a .919 save percentage. The Big Green is 15/66 on the power play and is 60/75 on the penalty kill. They have scored 18 first period goals, 22 second period goals and nine third period goals. The Last Time Out Junior P.J. Yedon scored at 3:41 of the overtime period to give Colgate a 3-2 win over Iona on Sunday at Skate Nation Arena. After a scoreless first period, sophomore Kelly Bararuk converted on the power play at 1:40 of the second period. Bararuk took a pass from Tim Krueckl off a Colgate turnover, and beat Raider sophomore goaltender David Cann stick-side. The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Gaels until 7:02 of the third period, when Colgate earned their own power play goal. Freshman Joey Mormina made a pass to Steve Silversides at the point, who fired a shot at Iona netminder Scott Galenza. The puck bounced directly to Adam Mitchell, who scored past a sprawled Galenza to tie the game at one. At 13:50 of the third, Ryan Manitowich put a Bararuk rebound over Cann’s shoulder on a two-on-one breakout. With just 3:05 remaining in regulation, Bob Vandersluis made a headman pass to Paul Kelley, who set up Silversides for the game-tying goal. Silversides one-timed the puck low on Galenza for his second goal of the year. At a 2-2 deadlock, Colgate and Iona headed into the first overtime for the Raiders this season. Silversides set up Yedon to give Colgate the win with 1:19 remaining in the extra period. The Raiders shelled Galenza with shots, who had to make 42 saves in the
loss. Cann made 18 stops to earn his first win of the season. Head coach Don Vaughan will be looking for his 100th career ECAC victory tonight against Dartmouth. Vaughan owns a career record of 99-85-18 against league opponents. Canisius Game Rescheduled The Colgate-Canisius men’s hockey game originally scheduled for December 30 will take place Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. at Starr Rink. The game was postponed due to Canisius’ ability to travel after record snowfalls hit the Buffalo area during Christmas break. The contest now makes up a five-game, nine-day homestand for the Raiders in early February. Former Roommates Square Off Junior Brad D’Arco will face another teammate from Taft this weekend when Vermont comes to town Saturday night. John Longo, D’Arco’s former roommate at Taft is a junior forward from Trumbull, Conn. The Firing Squad Watch for Colgate to come out firing in the third period as the Raiders have scored more than half of their goals in the final stanza including six in the last two games. Silversides Saves the Day Junior Steve Silversides picked a great time to have a career day in Sunday’s 3-2 overtime victory over Iona. Silversides, who had one career goal before this season, recorded three points, including the game tying tally as well as an assist on the game winning goal. Did You Know? The last time Colgate won an overtime game on the road was almost one year ago as the Raiders defeated Vermont by a score of 3-2. Eight is Enough (Almost) Junior Scooter Smith, the team’s leading scorer needs eight points to hit 50 career points. Up Next Colgate will host its second game of the weekend when Vermont comes to town Saturday night. The Raiders lead the all-time series with the Catamounts by a 29-22-4 margin. |
