UMASS LOWELL
OVERCOMES LATE COLGATE OUTBURST TO DEFEAT THE RAIDERS 7-4 January 4, 2002 HAMILTON, N.Y.--UMass Lowell senior center Yorick Treille recorded four straight points, including a hat trick to lead the River Hawks past the Colgate men’s hockey team 7-4 Friday night at Starr Rink. UMass Lowell improves to 14-3 overall while Colgate falls to 3-11. The River Hawks got off to a fast start with three first period goals, leading off with a tally by Geoff Schomogyi on which Treille assisted. Treille followed with a pair of goals to put Lowell up 3-0 after 20 minutes. Treille completed the hat
trick at 4:09 of the second period. With Ken Farrell’s score at 18:14,
Lowell took a 5-0 lead into the third period. The Raiders responded
with a three-goal outburst starting with a Rob Brown tally at 3:18. Brad
D’Arco followed 3:19 later with a goal of his own and Scooter Smith
completed the scoring drive at 10:45. The River Hawks regained
control of the game at 13:28 when Tom Rouleau scored his sixth goal of the
season to double up the Raiders 6-3. Colgate called a timeout to regroup
at 15:38, and after a slashing call on Treille put the teams at
four-on-four, the Raiders pulled netminder Steve Silverthorn in favor of
the extra skater. The gamble did not pay
off as Chris Gustafson buried the empty netter at 16:30. However, Colgate
was not finished as Joey Mormina recorded his first collegiate goal 28
seconds later to end the game. Colgate travels next to Iona, where they will take on the Gaels at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 6.
