WESTERN MICHIGAN
SHUTS OUT COLGATE 2-0
Red Raiders control most of the contest, but
can't break goalie Reynaert's armor
Duluth, Minn. --
The No. 7-ranked Western Michigan University men's ice hockey
team posted a 2-0 shutout against Colgate University in the
first round of the Silverado Shootout held in front of a crowd
of 3,049 fans at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention
Center.
The Broncos
(13-3-2) recorded their second shutout of the season behind a
30-save performance from goaltender Jeff Reynaert, who was in
the pipes for both WMU blankings. Western Michigan took a 1-0
lead early in the first period on Mike Bishai's 11th marker of
the season from Steve Rymsha and Reynaert at 2:52. Bishai took
a pass from Rymsha in the Colgate zone at the right face-off
circle and took advantage of a screened Colgate goalie David
Cann and found the net over Cann's shoulder on the stick side.
Despite the loss,
Colgate (3-11-2) controlled most of the game outshooting the
Broncos 30-22, while holding the advantage in face-offs and
hits, which was a pleasant sight for Colgate head coach Don
Vaughan.
"I thought we
played very well. When you are in the situation that we are
looking for the "W", you have to pull the positives
out of games like this," Vaughan said. "Considering
the layoff, I thought this was one of the best efforts we have
had this year."
After a scoreless
second frame, Western Michigan added an insurance goal at
14:39 of the third period on Jeff Campbell's 14th of the
season which trickled past Cann on the near post glove side.
The Broncos entered
the game averaging 4.7 goals a game, but the Red Raiders
posted a strong defensive effort limiting WMU to under three
goals for just the fifth time in 17 games this season.
"I thought we
did a good job of shutting them down and allowed just one odd
man rush," Vaughan added. "I was pleased with the
effort and we can't feel sorry for ourselves. We are winning a
lot of the statistical categories, but we aren't winning the
one that counts and that's on the scoreboard."
Colgate closes out
the Silverado Shootout against tournament host
Minnesota-Duluth at 7:05 tomorrow, while Western Michigan will
face Merrimack at 4:05.
