STRONG DEFENSIVE PLAY SPARKS COLGATE TO 6-2 WIN AGAINST YALE
Murphy and Doyle score two goals apiece, while Stay and Nolan each add three helpers

December 2, 2000

Hamilton, N.Y. -- Senior captain Cory Murphy and freshman forward Kyle Doyle scored two goals apiece to lead the Colgate University men's ice hockey team to a 6-2 victory against Yale in Eastern College Athletic Conference action Saturday night.

The Colgate offensive explosion was ignited by the Red Raider defensive efforts in the middle of the ice.  This defensive effort closed down all Yale (5-5-0, 3-5-0 ECAC) opportunities shutting them out for 54 minutes of the game.

"We put more emphasis on having guys back in our end and taking the middle of the ice away," Colgate head coach Don Vaughan said. "I thought we forced a lot of turnovers and were able to get our offense going."

"I think it was the most complete effort of the year," Vaughan added.

Colgate (3-9-2, 2-4-0 ECAC) took control from the start defensively with a strong attacking style of play primarily led by senior forward Dan Stay (North Hampton, N.H.) with hit after hit on the Bulldogs.

"He had an unbelievable game.  It is probably his best game since against Michigan last year (NCAA Tournament)," Vaughan said.

While Stay was forcing turnovers, he fed off that pressure to create things offensively registering three assists on the night including setting up the eventual game-winning goal.

Colgate scored the first five goals of the game holding a 1-0 lead after the first period with Murphy's (Kanata, Ont.) first of the game at 16:44.  Doyle (Sarnia, Ont.) scored his first collegiate marker at 15:25 of the second from Sean Nolan (Dorchester, Ont.) and Stay.  Nolan also finished the night with three helpers.

Etienne Morin (Levis, Que.) scored his fourth of the season at 19:37 of the second and then Murphy opened the third period scoring with his fifth of the season at 2:26 to build a 4-0 Colgate lead.

Bryan Long (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored his second goal of the year with a rocket from the right point at 12:46 of the third and then Doyle closed out the scoring for Colgate with his second of the game at 14:47.

Evan Wax (Syosset, N.Y.) and Jeff Hamilton (Englewood, Ohio) recorded the Bulldog goals at 14:30 and 16:48 in the third, respectively.

Jason Lefevre (Rome, N.Y.) posted 22 saves to record the victory improving to 3-7-2 overall and 2-2-0 in ECAC play.  Dan Lombard took the loss recording 34 saves and allowing all six goals.
