FERRIS
STATE THWARTS LATE THIRD PERIOD COLGATE RALLY
Basile scores the
game-winning goal at 14:18 of the third to give Bulldogs 5-4
win
November 3,
2000
Big
Rapids, Mich. – The Ferris State men’s ice hockey team
thwarted a late Colgate University comeback to prevail 5-4 on
Jason Basile’s first goal of the year at 14:18 of the third
period.
The Bulldogs (1-4-2) scored the game-winning goal at 14:18 of
the third on Basile’s first goal of the season.
Phil Lewandowski and Scott Markowsky skated down on a
two-on-two situation, while Basile trailed the play and skated
hard past Colgate’s Chad MacDonald and Markowsky found him
in front of the net. Basile
took a shot that Lefevre got a piece of, but the puck went
into the goal as Basile fell and carried Lefevre into the net
on the shot.
Ferris
took a 4-1 lead early in the second period on goals by Kevin
Swider and Rob Collins, but Colgate (1-2-2) mounted a
third-period comeback to tie the game 4-4 at 10:11.
Etienne Morin started the rally with the first of two goals in
the game when he intercepted a clearing attempt by Ferris
State goaltender Vince Owen and scored at the 8:24 mark of the
second period. With
the Red Raiders on a power-play Owen went behind the net to
clear the puck and backhanded it right to Morin and he easily
put the puck in the empty-net.
Morin scored his second of the game six minutes into the third
period on a snapshot from the high slot.
Bryan Long flipped the puck from his own blueline where
Morin batted it down and carried the puck into the Bulldogs
zone and recorded his second goal of the season.
O’Malley
tied the game with a shorthanded goal at 10:11 of the third.
He stole the puck from a Ferris State defenseman, put a
move on Owen and backhanded the puck in.
Swider who recorded two markers on the evening scored two of
Ferris’ four power-play goals on the evening.
Swider gave the Bulldogs the early advantage at 3:13 of
the first period when he pounded in the rebound off a shot by
Chris Kunitz on the right side of Colgate goaltender Jason
Lefevre.
FSU
took a 2-0 lead with its second power-play goal of the contest
on a blast from Kunitz just inside the right face-off circle
on feeds from Jim Dube and Swider.
Dube registered two assists on the evening.
The
Red Raiders on a 5-on-3 power-play pulled within 2-1 when Cory
Murphy’s shot from the high slot was redirected by Sean
Nolan in front of the net for his sixth goal of the season. Mike
O’Malley fed Murphy in the slot to pick up his fourth helper
on the year.
The
two teams resume action for the finale of the two-game series
with face-off at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday.
