HAMILTON,
N.Y. –
The
Harvard University men's ice hockey team snapped Colgate's
17-game ECAC unbeaten streak in Starr Rink with a 3-2 victory
Saturday afternoon.
It
was Colgate's first loss since a 3-2 loss on December 11, 1999
to Ferris State and was also the Red Raiders first ECAC loss
in Starr Rink since falling to Rensselaer 4-3 in overtime on
December 4, 1998.
Harvard
opened the scoring just 1:42 into the first period when
Crimson center Brett Nowak sent a backhander past Colgate
freshmen goalie David Cann (Brampton, Ont.). Nowak
received a pass from defender Dave McCulloch, stick handled,
then beat Cann.
The
Crimson held their 1-0 advantage throughout the remainder of
the first and all of the second period.
At 3:52 of the third, Harvard added to its lead on a
short-handed goal by Peter Capouch. Chris Bala carried
the puck into the Colgate zone and passed to Capouch who beat
Cann high on the stick side.
Colgate
got within one at 8:05 of the period when senior Cory Murphy
(Kanata, Ont.) beat Harvard goalie Oliver Jonas with a blast
from the top of the right circle. Murphy received the
puck from junior Etienne Morin (Levis, Que.) at the blue line
and carried it in for the blast.
Harvard
rebuilt its two-goal cushion at 15:07 when Tyler Kolarik beat
Cann on a breakaway. Jared Cantanucci cleared the puck from
behind the Harvard net to Kolarik who was waiting for it at
the red line. Kolarik skated it in and scored on the
backhand.
Colgate
cut the lead to 3-2 with 48 seconds remaining when sophomore
Scooter Smith deflected a shot from freshmen Rob Brown
(Brockville, Ont.) with an extra-attacker after Colgate pulled
Cann. Brown received a pass from senior Pat Varecka
(Plymouth, Minn.) and took a blast from the right point that
Smith was able to redirect for his fourth marker of the ECAC
weekend.
Colgate
drops to 2-6-2, 1-3-0 in the ECAC, and Harvard improves to
3-1-1 overall and in the ECAC.
The
Red Raiders resume action on Saturday, Nov. 25 when they face
Niagara at 4 p.m. in the first round of the Syracuse
Invitational Tournament.
While Harvard travels to Boston University at 7 p.m.
this Tuesday.
