LATE
FLURRY PROPELS UNION TO 4-2 VICTORY AGAINST COLGATE
Two goals in the
final 29 seconds give Union victory against Red Raiders
November 11,

SCHENECTADY,
N.Y. –
A late flurry in the final 29 seconds of the game
propelled the Union men’s ice hockey team to a 4-2 victory
against Colgate in Eastern College Athletic Conference action
Saturday night.
With
just 29 seconds remaining and the score knotted at 2-2,
Union’s Charles Simard scored the second of his two markers
on the night after Jeff Hutchins won a face-off on the right
circle right back to Simard who hit a bombing slapshot to
Cann’s stick side in the right corner of the net.
Following
Simard’s goal, Jeff Wilson added an empty-netter to give
Union (5-1-0, 3-0-0 ECAC) the final 4-2 margin of victory.
Colgate freshman goaltender David Cann making his first career
start, kept the Red Raiders (1-5-2, 0-2-0 ECAC) in the game as
he showed his abilities early stopping the first of three
one-on-none shots in the contest.
The first of two breakaway shots by Jeff Wilson came
five minutes into the first period and the second Wilson
attempt stoned by Cann was seven minutes into the second. Cann closed out the point-blank opportunities from
Union stuffing Jeff Hutchins at 7:56 of the third period.
Colgate’s
power-play produced the first goal of the evening when Cory
Murhpy connected on a slapshot from the high slot off feeds
from Scooter Smith and Ben Bryce at 10:19 of the second period
giving the Red Raiders a 1-0 lead.
Following
seven minutes on the penalty-kill as Union was whistled
four-consecutive times in the second, the Skating Dutchmen
received a power-play opportunity of their own and capitalized
to tie the game at one.
Union’s Charles Simard had a similar goal to Murphy’s with
the slapper from the high slot beating Cann stick side high
corner.
Just 50 seconds later, Jason Ralph connected after a Jeff
Hutchins shot was saved by Cann on the left crease and then
Ralph’s shot off the rebound hit off the crossbar and into
the net to put Union ahead 2-1.
Colgate
was put in an uncomfortable position after Chad MacDonald
received a five-minute major penalty and a
game-disqualification at 4:58 of the third period.
Despite the challenge, the Red Raiders managed to tie the game
two-minutes into the penalty-kill with a shorthanded marker
created by Etienne Morin.
Morin settled a loose puck to the right side behind the
net skated around to the left face-off circle and ripped a
shot that was saved, but
the puck rebounded to Mike O’Malley on the right side
of the slot and he wristed it in at 6:44 of the third.
The
Red Raiders resume action on Friday, Nov. 17 when they face
Brown at 7 p.m. for the first game of Silver Puck weekend.
Colgate closes out the ECAC weekend series against
Brown at 4 p.m.
