RENSSELAER HANDS COLGATE THIRD STRAIGHT LOSS
Graham scores two including game-winner to lift Engineers to 3-2 victory

November 10, 2000

TROY, N.Y.  Nolan Graham scored two goals including the game-winning goal to lift Rensselaer men’s ice hockey team a 3-2 victory against Colgate in Eastern College Athletic Conference action Friday night.

Graham gave RPI  the 1-0 lead at 11:29 of the first period with his second marker of the season on feeds from Matt Murley and Jim Vickers.  Murley set up Graham in the slot and where Graham first shot rebounded right to his stick and he put it in.  The goal came just five seconds after the Red Raiders killed off RPI’s first power-play opportunity of the game.

The Engineers (3-2-0, 1-1-0 ECAC) gave Colgate goalkeeper Jason Lefevre a stern test in the first period pelting the junior netminder with 18 shots on goal.  Lefevre was up to the challenge stopping all the but Graham’s rebound goal in the period.

The Colgate defense buckled down in the second period allowing just five shots on goal.  Despite the solid defensive effort by the Red Raiders in the second,  the Engineers capitalized on their fourth power-play opportunity of the evening after being shutout on their first three tries when Jim Vickers recorded his first marker of the season.

Trailing 2-0, the Red Raiders (1-4-2, 0-1-0 ECAC) were able to get a power-play chance just before the end of the second when Marc Cavosie was whistled for obstruction-infererence taking down Paul Kelley in the RPI zone.

Colgate’s power-play unit (2-for-8 on the night)  took advantage of the opportunity scoring just 19 seconds into the chance when Mike O’Malley registered his third goal of the year from Bryan Long and Cory Murphy.   Murphy was behind the goal on the right side and slid a pass to Bryan Long on the left side of the net where he found O’Malley in the slot and he pounded the puck in.

Rensselaer extended its lead to 3-1 at 6:43 of the third when Graham recorded his second marker of the night and third of the season from Andrew McPherson.

Colgate cut the lead to 3-2 just over a minute later with its second power-play goal of the game from Chad MacDonald in the slot at 7:45.  After Cory Murphy and Scooter Smith traded passes, Smith took a shot and MacDonald put in the rebound in front of the net.

The loss marks the first time that Colgate has lost three straight games dating back to the conclusion of the 1997-98 season when the Red Raiders dropped their last four games at Clarkson and St. Lawrence, and at Harvard in the first round of the ECAC Championship.

The Red Raiders resume action on Saturday when they travel to nearby Schenectady to close out the weekend against Union at 7 p.m.
