COLGATE MEN'S
ICE HOCKEY RIDES THE WAVE WITH 4-2 WIN AT YALE
First back-to-back wins of
season for CU behind three power-play goals in final two minutes of
second period
Game Boxscore
New Haven, Conn. -- Colgate University scored three
power-play goals in a 1:26 span in the final two minutes of the
second period to give the Red Raiders to a 4-2 victory at Yale in ECAC action
men's ice hockey action Friday night.
The
victory closed out the season sweep of the Bulldogs and marked the
first time this season that Colgate (7-16-4, 5-9-1 ECAC) has
recorded back-to-back victories. The Red Raiders now have five
consecutive wins against Yale dating back to 3/4/00 and it was the
first Colgate win in New Haven since 3/13/99 when they won 7-2 in
the ECAC Championship first round.
After a 1-1 first period, the second period was in favor of Yale
(10-12-0, 6-9-0 ECAC) thanks in part to three power-play chances in
the first 16 minutes of the period. Colgate goaltender David
Cann (Brampton, Ont.) came up huge stopping a breakaway attempt by
Luke Earl (Simsbury, Conn.) at 9:41 of the second and finished with
30 saves
on the
night for his second consecutive win in his fourth straight start.
The Red Raiders offensive explosion was prompted by their power-play
which was setup by Yale's Lee Jelenic after laying a viscious hit on
Bob Vandersluis, which resulted in a five-minute major call for
boarding at 16:54.
Colgate took full advantage of its chances scoring three times in
the second with the man-advantage. Cory Murphy (Kanata,
Ont.) started things off with his sixth of the season just
over a minute into the power-play at 17:59 from Etienne Morin
(Levis, Que.) and Rob Brown (Brockville, Ont.). Morin skated
behind the net and found Murphy wide open in the slot and he hit a
slapper in the right corner of the net.
Just 17 seconds later, Mike O'Malley (New Hartford, N.Y.) registered
his 8th of the season from Nolan and Muprhy. Then a
little over a minute later, Bryan Long (Londmeadow, Mass.) connected
for his fourth of the year from Ben Bryce (Carleton Place, Ont.) and
Scooter Smith (Calgary, Alb.).
The Bulldogs killed off the remainder of the penalty which carried
1:56 over into the third period and then scored an even-strength
goal with Jeff Hamilton's (Englewood, Ohio) 14th of the season from
Joe Dart at 3:22 of the third. Dart make a great feed to a
wide-open Hamilton on the right side of the net underneath the
face-off circle, Colgate goalie David Cann was hugging left
post and couldn't recover to Hamilton's shot.
Colgate resumes action at Princeton tomorrow with face-off at 7
p.m., while Yale hosts Cornell in completion of their ECAC weekend.
