COLGATE MEN'S
ICE HOCKEY HALTS FOUR-GAME
LOSING SKID WITH 4-1 VICTORY AGAINST BROWN
Game Boxscore
Providence, R.I. --
Colgate University scored three third-period goals including the
game-winner from Kevin Johns (Almonte, Ont.) and David Cann
(Brampton, Ont.) recorded his first career victory to give the Red
Raiders a 4-1 against Brown in ECAC men's ice hockey action Saturday
night.
Scooter Smith (Calgary, Alb.) tried to feed Sean Nolan
(Dorchester, Ont.) in front of the net, but Nolan couldn't get a
stick on it. Nolan hustled to the boards getting the puck and waited
finding Johns in the slot and he blasted the puck to the right side
of the net.
The win halted Colgate's four-game losing skid and kept the Red
Raiders from slipping into last place in the ECAC. Cann picked up
his first victory in seven starts this season, finishing with 24
saves on the night.
The game was as evenly-matched as one would expect from the teams
securing 11th and 12th in the ECAC. Both teams were even in shots on
goal and knotted at 1-1 after the first period.
After killing off Colgate's first power-play opportunity in the
first period, Brown (4-15-2, 2-10-2 ECAC) got on the board with a
power-play goal by Paul Elsdale (Edmonton, Alb.) just 3:40 into the
game. Elsdale redirected Josh Barker's (Swift Current, Sask.) shot
from the right point past David Cann making his third consecutive
start.
Colgate (6-16-4, 4-9-1 ECAC) evened the game at 1-1, when Paul
Kelley (Grand Forks, B.C.) wristed a shot from the left face-off
circle Brown over goaltender Brian Eklund's (Braintree, Mass.) left
shoulder 8:08 into the first period.
Despite being on the penalty-kill for six minutes of the second
period (including two too many men on the ice calls), Colgate
managed nine shots on goal. P.J. Yedon (Toronto, Ont.) had the Red
Raiders' best chance with 5:14 remaining in the second period when
he had a breakaway, but Eklund came up with the stop.
Even played continued in the second period with 10 shots apiece,
with neither team finding the net. However, the Red Raiders finally
took control of the game with an 11-6 shot advantage in the third
and scoring the three third-period markers.
Mike O'Malley (New Hartford, N.Y.) scored the first of two
power-play goals in the final five minutes of the game at 15:45. The
power-play was setup when Brown's J-F Labarre was whistled for a
five-minute major at 14:05 for a check from behind. P.J. Yedon
scored the final Colgate goal on the same power-play off a feed from
Nolan at 17:01.
Colgate resumes action from the road next weekend with Yale and
Princeton, Feb. 9 and 10, respectively. Brown travels to Vermont and
Dartmouth (Feb. 9-10).
