COLGATE MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CREW SUCCESSFUL IN THEIR DEBUT AT DIVISION I LEVEL WITH VICTORIES AGAINST LAFAYETTE

Syracuse, N.Y. -- The Colgate men's and women's varsity crew teams posted a strong effort in their 2001 debut and first official race at the Division I level, defeating fellow Patriot League foe Lafayette last Sunday at the Syracuse Boathouse on Onondaga Lake.

Colgate which had competed at the club level for the past 27 years, began its transition into Division I with regattas in the fall, but this race was the first head-to-head intercollegiate competition of the year. The Colgate men's and women's crew program became a Division I program in the fall of 2000.

The Red Raiders captured four of five 1500-meter races taking the men's varsity 8, women's varsity 8, women's novice 8 and women's second novice 8.

The men's varsity (1-0) ran two boats with the "A" boat comprised of
coxswain Ashley Stone, stroke John Oros, Scott Adams, Alex Woodcock, Jamie Knowles, Hunter Southworth, Warren Holland, Will Crane, and bow Chris Martin covering the course in 4:14, while the "B" boat lead by coxswain Valerie Shapiro, stroke Yariv Amir, Bill Chiodetti, Steve Boehmke, Tom Wines, John Dalton, Toby Ralston, Henry Sztul, bow Josh Park posted a 4:19. Both boats defeated Lafayette's boat which went the distance in 4:25.

The women's varsity (1-0) also ran two boats with the "A" boat consisting of coxswain Jordan Oberholtzer, stroke Kate McCarthy, Karen Rupp, Betsy Buyers, Laura Beth Chamberlain, Liz Reed, Liz Roller, Gosia Wawrzak and bow Emma Hinsdale recording a 4:38 over 1500 meters, while the "B" boat comprised of coxswain Chrissy Weaver, stroke Mary Patch, Juli Jansing, Toni Machowsky, Laura Darraugh, Irene Jenkins, Stacia Kutter, Christy Calabro and bow Thea Schlendorf finished with a time of 4:48. Both boats defeated the Leopards which covered the course in a time of 4:54.

The Red Raiders will resume action on Saturday against Ithaca and the University of Rochester in Ithaca at 1 p.m.
