RAIDERS DOWN CORNELL
76-58 IN HOME OPENER
HAMILTON, N.Y.—Howard Blue scored 17 points and grabbed four rebounds as Colgate (1-2) dominated in-state rival Cornell Tuesday night at Cotterell Court in a non-league contest. Andrew Zidar and Keith Williams were also in double-figures in scoring for Colgate, netting 13 and 10 respectively. Cornell, 1-1, was led by Lenny Collins’ 12 points. The Raiders gained control of the contest early and did not look back. They opened up a 10-point lead with 8:25 remaining in the first half when Colgate’s Matt Shirley swatted away a Cody Toppert shot which landed in the Blue’s hands who dished the ball to Tim Sullivan for the lay-up. Mark Linebaugh’s 10-foot jumper extended the Raider lead to 20 as the buzzer sounded, giving Colgate a 50-30 halftime advantage. Blue feasted on the Big Red down low in the first half, netting 13 at the break. The Raiders out-rebounded Cornell 16-6 in the first half. Colgate led by as many as 27 in the second half and emptied the bench with under two minutes remaining in the contest. The Raiders continued to struggle from the foul line, however, connecting on only 3-of-7 attempts, while the Big Red shot 69% (9-of-13) from the stripe. Dave Hardy led the Raiders with six assists while Williams and Zidar collected seven rebounds apiece. Colgate is back on the floor Saturday when they face Hobart at home. Tip-off is 2:00.
