MEN'S BASKETBALL HOLDS ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET

April 18, 2002

HAMILTON, N.Y. -- The Colgate University men's basketball team held its annual awards banquet Sunday, April 14 at the Colgate Inn to celebrate the 2001-02 season and to honor the senior class of Pat Campolieta, LaMarr Datcher, Bill Kern and Devon Tuohey.

Awards were given for individual achievement in field goal percentage to sophomore Howard Blue (.528, 123-233), free throw percentage to sophomore Mark Linebaugh (.778, 98-126), rebounding to Campolieta (7.2 rpg, 202 reb.) and assists to junior point guard Dave Hardy (83 assists).

Patriot League plaques were given to Campolieta for being named to the first team and freshman Keith Williams for being named to the all-rookie squad.  Campolieta earned the honor of being named to the all-league team for the fourth time, a first in league history.

Campolieta was also awarded the Bob Duffy/Tucker Neale Most Valuable Player Award for the third consecutive year.  Campolieta ends his Colgate career after playing in a school record 113 games with record-setting 110 starts.  He also finishes his career ranked in Colgate's top 10 in five different catregories: first in steals with 193, fourth in overall scoring with 1,616 points, fourth in assists with 250, sixth in rebounding with 698 boards and seventh in field goal percentage with a career .482 percent.  Campolieta was also given a plaque to commemorate all these accomplishments.

The Hasan Brown Award given to the student athlete who typifies the spirit of Colgate basketball was awarded to junior Martin Marek.  Marek had his most solid season yet as a Raider, playing in all 28 games with 17 starts, scoring 169 points, a career best, and pulling down 73 rebounds.

The Jack Mitchell Award was awarded to senior LaMarr Datcher.  This award is given the the student-athlete who shows excellence in the classroom as well as on the court.

The Coaches' Award for Best Defensive Player was shared by Campolieta and Kern.  Kern participated in 26 games this season with 11 starts.  The Raiders were 8-3 after inserting him in the starting lineup.

Before concluding this year's awards ceremony, head coach Emmett Davis announced the 2002-03 captains as juniors Jeremy Ballard and Hardy.

The 2001-02 season for the Raiders ended with a 17-11 overall record and an 8-6 record in Patriot League play.  Their 17 wins is the second most wins in school history, led only by the 1992-93 squad's 18 wins.  The 2001-02 squad also boasts such accomplishments as sweeping league opponents Holy Cross, Lafayette and Army in regular season play.
