Linebaugh Scores 20 Points
To Lead Colgate Over Lafayette, 85-73
HAMILTON, N.Y. — Sophomore Mark
Linebaugh scored 20 points and dished out five assists as Colgate
downed Lafayette, 85-73, Sunday afternoon in a Patriot League game at
Cotterell Court. Colgate (17-10, 8-6)
finished in a tie for third place in the Patriot League standings with
Bucknell and Lafayette (14-13, 8-6).
Bucknell will be seeded third in the Patriot League Tournament,
while Colgate takes the fourth seed and Lafayette the fifth seed. The Raiders will open
the Patriot League Tournament on Saturday, March 2 against Lafayette in
the quarterfinal round at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Maryland
at 2:30 p.m. In other quarterfinal
action, top-seeded American University (17-10, 10-4) plays #8 seed Lehigh
(5-22, 2-12) at noon; #2 Holy Cross (15-14, 9-5) meets #7 Navy (10-19,
5-9) at 5 p.m.; and #3 Bucknell (12-15, 8-6) tangles with #6 Army (12-15,
6-8) at 7:30 p.m. The Colgate-Lafayette
and Holy Cross-Navy games will be televised on the Patriot League
Television Network. The Raiders had four
players in double figures as they swept their season series with
Lafayette. Junior Tim
Sullivan pumped in 19 points including four 3-pointers, while Howard
Blue had his first double-double of the season with 15 points and 10
rebounds. Pat
Campolieta added 11 points, eight rebounds, six steals and five
assists, while Dave Hardy tallied
eight assists. Campolieta became
Colgate’s all-time steal leader with 191 passing Mike Boswell (1983-87),
who had 186. Justin DeBerry paced
Lafayette with 14 points, followed by Mike Farrell and Andrew Pleick with
12 apiece and Dill with 10. The
Leopards’ leading scorer Brian Burke was held to six points, after
scoring 43 points in his last outing against Lehigh. Colgate jumped on the
Leopards early in the contest and never looked back as the Raiders won
their eighth game in the last 10 outings. Trailing 4-3, Hardy made a lay-up and Linebaugh nailed one of
his four three-pointers to give the Raiders an 8-4 lead, which they increased to
25 points, 46-21, with 2:15 remaining before halftime. In the second half,
Colgate held a 26-point advantage with 4:42 left before coach Emmett Davis
cleared the bench. Lafayette
put together a 16-point run in the closing minutes making 11-of-12 free
throws down the stretch. Colgate shot the ball
very well throughout the contest finishing with 48 percent, including
10-of-19 from three-point range. Lafayette,
which was hurt by 20 turnovers including 12 in the first half, shot 42
percent from the field. The
Leopards had a slight advantage on the boards, 39-36, led by DeBerry and
Dill with six apiece. |
