HOLY CROSS DEFEATS COLGATE IN PATRIOT LEAGUE OPENER 68-55

WORCESTER, MA. – Sophomore Tim Szatko came off the bench to score 13 points and grab 10 rebounds to lead Holy Cross College to a 68-55 win over Colgate Wednesday night in the Patriot League opener at the Hart Center.

Holy Cross (11-4, 1-0) won its second straight game to surpass last year’s win total of 10 victories, while Colgate (6-8, 0-1) dropped its fourth straight contest.

The Crusaders had four other players in double figures paced by center Josh Sankes with a game-high 17 points, Ryan Serravalle with 11 and freshman Jave Meade with 10.

Colgate was paced by sophomore Tim Sullivan with 16 points, including four 3-pointers, while Pat Campolieta added 12 points and Dave Hardy tallied 10.

With the score tied 4-4, Holy Cross put together a nine-point run and never looked back, as the Crusaders snapped a two-game losing streak against the Red Raiders.  After Holy Cross led by as many as 12 points in the opening half, Colgate cut the deficit to five at the intermission, 33-28.

In the second half, Colgate trailed by six points, 41-35, with 16:13 remaining, before the Crusaders went on a 19-2 run for a 23-point lead with 7:46 left.  Meade jump started the run with back-to-back 3-pointers for the Crusaders.

The closest Colgate came after that run was the final 13-point difference.

Colgate had a cold-shooting night against the taller Crusaders making only 36 percent (17-of-47) from the field, but did hit on six-of-13 3-pointers (46 percent).  Holy Cross outrebounded the Red Raiders 35-28.

Off the bench for Colgate, freshman Mark Linebaugh scored seven points and grabbed a career-high six rebounds, while Rob Akers had a season-high eight points and five rebounds.
