Marian Blain
(Burke), who has served as head professional at Colgate
University’s Seven Oaks Golf Course since 1983, has been named
head coach of the Raiders’ golf program beginning with the
2005-06 season.
Blain is
replacing Brad Houston, who is retiring this spring after 27
years as head coach of the Raiders.
“We are
excited that someone with Marian’s ability and expertise will be
coaching the Colgate golf program beginning with the 2005-06
academic year,” said Colgate athletics director Dave Roach. “It
is a plus for Colgate golf to have one of CNY’s most respected
golf professionals overseeing our program. I look forward to
working with Marian in the years ahead.”
“I feel
fortunate to be given the opportunity to coach the Colgate golf
team,” said Blain. “It will be exciting to share the experience
and knowledge that I have learned over the years as both a
former collegiate player and as a PGA professional.”
Blain
returned to her hometown of Hamilton, N.Y., in 1979, and served
as an assistant at Seven Oaks for three years before taking over
the head position. She was the first woman golf pro in Central
New York.
She played
her collegiate golf at Miami Dade Junior College and the
University of South Florida, where she graduated in 1977.
Following graduation, she played mini-tours in Florida and Ohio,
and played in four LPGA events as an amateur.
In 2004,
Blain was named the Central New York PGA Women’s Player of the
Year. She was recognized for her work on her golf game in
addition to her performance at Seven Oaks.
She won the
CNY PGA Professional of the Year in 1992 and received Colgate’s
Maroon Council Citation that same year.
Blain and
her husband, John, reside in Hamilton with their eight-year old
daughter, Bridget.
