Colgate University's Athletic Department
Colgate has a very proud tradition of combining excellence in academics with excellence in athletics. We are very unique in that we are a small liberal arts college, yet our teams play at the Division I level. We are the second highest ranked liberal arts college with Division I athletics. Our student athletes are truly students first, as evidenced by the fact that we placed fifth in the NCAA in terms of the graduation rate (89%) of our student athletes. Our student athletes graduate at the same rate as our general students.
Our student-athletes are also very successful on the playing field. We have a long, proud tradition as a "giant killer", a small school that successfully competes against schools many times larger. This is personified by our men's hockey team playing in the 1990 NCAA championship game against Wisconsin. Over the years, we have had numerous teams win Patriot League championships.
We have a very broad athletic program which provides numerous opportunities for our students. We have 25 varsity sports--13 women's and 12 men's. Twenty-one of our teams participate in the Patriot League, while our men's and women's hockey teams play in the ECAC. Approximately 20% of our students participate on varsity programs. In addition to varsity teams, we offer many other opportunities. We have a very active club sports program with over 20 teams. Almost 16% of the student body participates in club teams. In addition, we have a well developed intramural program in which more than 70% of the student-body participates. We have one of the best Outdoor Education programs in the country, taking advantage of our rural location and proximity to the Adirondacks. Also, all students are required to take four physical education classes.
As shown above, we have a very active, healthy student body. We have many outstanding facilities available to our students. The Wm. Brian Little Fitness Center is a state-of-the-art facility with excellent equipment for strength and aerobic training. We also have a Robert Trent Jones designed golf course and an Astroturf practice and competition field (Tyler's Field).
On this site, you'll be able to learn more about our specific teams and programs. We are very excited and proud of our program, and are glad that you decided to learn more about Colgate athletics.
