COOPER HONORED AS FIRST RECIPIENT
OF STEVE BUSHEE AWARD

May 16, 2001

HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Colgate University senior Cassie Cooper, from Troy Michigan, has been honored as the inaugural recipient of the “Steve Bushee Award.”

The ‘Steve Bushee Award’ is given to a senior student athletic trainer who demonstrates over four years exemplary dedication and expertise in the care of the student-athletes of Colgate University.

Cooper has been a mainstay of the Colgate Sports Medicine program since she walked into the training room in the fall of 1997.  She was a fixture with the Colgate football program, working all four years on the Red Raider sideline.  She has also been the ‘go-to’ student athletic trainer, working wherever she was needed.  Says Marty Erb, head athletic trainer at Colgate and Cassie’s primary supervisor; “Cassie will be impossible to replace.  She has been like an additional full-time assistant for the past couple years. Much like Steve Bushee, she was always there when needed.  When I had my year end interviews with the underclass athletic trainers, and asked them what their goals in our program were, almost half indicated they would like to be an athletic trainer like Cassie.  I cannot think of a more deserving recipient to honor with the first presentation of the ‘Steve Bushee Award’ than Cassie Cooper.”

Cooper is a past recipient of the “Lew Williams Student Athletic Trainer Achievement Award”.  She is the only sophomore ever to receive the award.

Steve Bushee is a 1981 graduate of Colgate who worked for four years as a student athletic trainer with the Sports Medicine program.  His love for athletic training was immediately evident as he worked enthusiastically in all aspects of the program.  Whether it was football, wrestling, field hockey, women’s lacrosse, or clinic duty, Steve put 110% effort into the care of the student athletes who were his charge.  He is the student athletic trainer by whom all other athletic trainers are measured.  His love for the profession of athletic training and the unfailing desire to take care of the student athlete are traits that inspire all athletic trainers.

Bushee is currently Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine at Boston College.  “It is with great honor that we establish this award,” Erb said, “to thank Steve for his past contributions to athletic training, and to inspire Colgate student athletic trainers in the future.”
